I've posted it here and on Overlander. Hopefully one will get me an answer tonight.
I'm a gumby, my kid thinks I'm a major chance at the next dumb and dumber movie.
Homework question
3a - 5 = a +7 I know the answer is 6 but how do I get that in some sort of formula so I can help her with the other 50.
Other examples include
4x - 3 = 7 - x
10x + 1 = 25 - 2x
and the doozie of them all
2(4x - 7) = 5(2x + 3)
Urgent and speedy accurate replies will be accepted like gold.

Hi there money pit,
The trick here is to get the solveable variable on one side of the =
sign and then solve. When you swap values either side of = you need to swap +ve and -ve. When you have a value outside of brackets i.e. 2(x+4) then that is short way of stating 2x+8.
Examples from above
1) 3a-5=a+7; 3a-a=7+5; 2a=12; a=12/6=6
2) 4x-3=7-x; 4x+x=7+3; 5x=10; x=10/5=2
3) 2(4x-7)=5(2x+3); 8x-14=10x+15; 8x-10x=15+14; -2x=29; x=-(29/2)=-14.5
I hope this helps with the homework.
Regards,
Hugh

Well u have to know algerbra. Ther r rules but hard to apply single formula. Here we go 4 the ones u have put up.
3a-5=a+7
Well u can shift each item each side but they change
sign from + t0 _ or vice versa when u do that so
3a-a=7+5
2a=12
a=6
and
4x-3=7-x
4x+x=7+3
5x=10
x=2
and
10x+1=25-2x
10x+2x=25-1
12x=24
x=2
and
2(4x-7)=5(2x+3)
multiply out brackets
8x-14=10x+15
8x-10x=15+14
-2x=29
x=-14.5
and i'm 60 and never thouight i'd need to remember this sh*t again!!!!

What you do to one side of the"="
sign you have to do to the other.
3a-5=a+7
3a-5-a=7
3a-a=7+5
2a=12
a=6
4x-3=7-x
4x+x-3=7
5x=7+3
5x=10
x=2
10x+1=25-2x
10x=25-1-2x
10x+2x=24
12x=24
x=2
2(4x-7)=5(2x+3)
8x-14=10x+15
8x-10x=15+14
-2x=29
x=-14.5
(unless I have had too many reds....which is quite possible!)

I assume this post is all about how you can derive the dimensions of the drawer system you are planning for your 4by???

3a - 5 = a +7
(1) transpose all the "a's" onto the same side, remember when moving from one side to the other the
sign must change, so the "a" on the right hand side becomes "-a" when moved to the left hand side
this gives us "3a - 5 - a = 7"
(2) transpose all the numbers onto the same side. Remember the change
sign rule - by moving "- 5" from the left hand side it becomes "+5" on the right hand side
this gives us "3a - a = 7 +5"
(3) add up each side individually
(3a - a) becomes 2a, (7 + 5) becomes 12
so, this gives us "2a = 12"
(4) divide both sides by "2"
result is " a = 6"
"4x - 3 = 7 - x" and "10x + 1 = 25 - 2x " - use same method
2(4x - 7) = 5(2x + 3)
(1) multiply everything inside the brackets by everything outside the brackets to get, on left hand side you will have "8x -14", on right hand side "10x +15"
or "8x - 14 = 10x +15
(2) then follow above procedure
8x - 14 = 10x +15
8x - 14 - 10x = 15
8x - 10x = 15 +14
-2x = 29
-x = 14.5
x = -14.5

Put in the equation you need, it not only gives the answer but the breakdown of how to get the answer I used this when I had to help my teenager.

I'm grateful for all the input but I am really really really truly truly truly happy about this particular entry.
Its at the top of my favourites and also put it in my stash of passwords and serial numbers just in case the puter ever walks out the door by a non-invited guest.

BODMAS is my recollection, but "t'internet" suggests either could be winners.
Can't be fagged to look it all up. Anyone?

Thanks for reminding me how much I hated maths in school... I still can't figure out why we learn algebra... Don't know a single person who applies it in real life.

Even the tradies I know live off charts(by their own admission) to work stuff out, never see them put pen to paper to work it out.

Moneypit Don't worry about impressing your daughter, These blokes have impressed me no end.
I had forgotten more of this stuff than I ever could remember (does that make sense?)
As Blue said "You never use the stuff in the real world"
