How is this for a response to a simple question to holden customer support requesting the brand and original type of oil used from the factory so I could top it up with the same type as I do not like to mix oils especially synthetic and non synthetic variaties.
Thank you for your email.
We advise that due to contractual obligations in place, we are not able to release information pertaining to our suppliers, and as such, cannot quote specific brands or information pertaining to synthetic or non-synthetic.
We are only able to advise that your vehicle require a particular specification of oil, and we suggest you use the correct specification of your desired brand.
Yours sincerely,
Jackie Nagy

Thats a ripper response. I also asked Toyota something similar recently, the response wasn't quite as anal, but they wouldn't tell me brand info all, just spec.

Allow me to paraphrase:
Option 1: 'We do not have a clue, just whatever is lying around at the time''
Option 2: ' I could probably find out but in keeping in line with our customer service philosophy but can't be bothered '
Option 3: ' We don't use the correct type of oil from the factory, but suggest you do'
Option 4" ' We are worried that if we tell you what oil we use, and you continue to use it and it will result in serious engine damage and in turn increase our expenses as far as warranty work goes, and our reputation. Therefore, it is better that we don't tell you"
WHAT A JOKE.

You forgot to add that regardless they'll charge like they filled the sump with gold-flavoured oil.

If makers divulged such details they would not be able to charge a premium for 'their' genuine spare parts and motoring would suddenly get a bit cheaper.
It is the same in other areas of life - have a look at how much Mercury (or other outboard makers) charge for 'their' parts, incl oils. Worse, outboard makers say you will void warranty if you don't use their repackaged oils..

That could cost them million$ if they insist you use their products, under the "Restrictive Trade Practices Act"..Remember Julius Marlow & one of the big fridge makers
Dalgety used to sell..They paid dearly..(After all,we don't void out warranty if we use UltraTune to service our rigs..In spite of OEM's adverts hinting we might..Sly little devils are'nt they?)

You are right, the risk, if any, is implied.
I was not directing my comment about warranty at Mercury or other any particular maker. As far as I can see, the reputable makers like Mercury, Yamaha, Johnson, Honda and so on do provide good warranty service.

We used to have a good chuckle each time Nissan documented "Nissan Special Blend" on the service invoices.

Yeah... my view of Holden is slowly slipping..
well to be truthfull.. down the drain.
I've got a mate that used to work at a Holden dealership..... i'll give him a ring to see what he says..... he doesn't work there anymore so he might be happy to give the information out !
I've had very similar dealings with Holden just yesterday..re: my Frontera Recall on the Steering problem... will post ALL details shortly.

Instead of topping it up, why not change it to oil of your choice yourself, takes 10-20mins?
From then on tell dealers when they service it, you will supply the oil yourself instead of using their Lucky Chows Cheap crap at Gold prices... easier than tryin to get blood from a stone.

I don't have a problem with this.
The oil that leaves the factory is a running-in oil.
After that, most service depts use any multipurpose oil that they get for a good price. Whenever I asked, some were using
Mobil, some Castrol ..... and the only thing for certain was that the guy in the suit behind the counter didn't have a clue and would go out and ask.
Like the reply says, just go by the specs - thats all the dealers do.
Cheers
Phil

I went into the Nissna dealer in
Darwin requesting for a top up of the oil in my patrol as it had used a bit from
Townsville to
Darwin. They asked what type of oil was in it and I didn't know as the last servivce was done by Nissan in Tve. The vehicle is fairly new so a bit of oil use was OK. They rang Nissan Tve and found out what oil was used and told me where to get some at another place and to top it up myself as they didn't use the same oil.
Pretty good for a Nissan dealer I thought.

and the oil was ?????
i have done extensive research on the net and by phone for many hours running into days and then weeks and have concluded, with some trepidation and unbiased suspicion from the shell technical contact number and many other sources that the ultimate decision i came up with was, and this is no way a plug for them as i am retired and have absolutely no financial interest in or gain to make............ wait for it...........
SHELL
HELIX
DIESEL
SUPER
specs: 15w/40 API CF/SH
NOT CG4 as advised not to use as stated in manual as i also made extensive enquiries as to why not the CG4 and the reason being it viciously degregated the camshaft surfaces.
the vehicle i undertook all this research for was a
2001 GUII ST NISSAN PATROL
3.0L TURBO
diesel obviously
now i'm not a mechanics @sshole so if i've totally stuffed up and made a complete fool of myself please, and i'm sure ya's will, enlighten me....
regards
robs

Oem oil is a 'special' blend, made to order under contract by any of the major oil blenders, with low amounts of friction modifiers to allow the new style low tension rings to bed properly. Strangely, the new holden v6 is first filled with a synthetic for export, but mineral oil is used for domestic.
With any new motor, dont change the oil for about 7-8 thousand kays to allow proper bedding in, change the filters a few times and top up with the book specified oil as needed, but dont drop the first fill oil straight up.
As for dealers, depends who has the supply contract with the best kickbacks, most dealers only have 1 or2 specs on tap, a lot are still using 20w50 in everything or 15w40, even in new vehicles that specify 10w30 or lower.
BUt that is a pearler of a response, totally useless, typical holden
