G'Day All,
Does anyone use one of these?
I have been trying to decide between Garmin and one of the Navman units, but keep reading about the Garmin, "so easy even the wife uses it"
Seeing as it is SWMBO who wants one I am inclined to go with them. Seen them on special for $899 complete with unlocked set of maps and SD card
Interested in how far the V6.0 mapping gets you once out of town.
Regards
Rolande

hate to confuse you but I bought SWMBO the Navman 510 and she finds it really good. Surprisingly many/most outback and high country tracks are included and the GPS screens are easy to use.

Peter,
Thanks for the reply. I think the Navman maps may be better but it is of no consequence if SWMBO finds it difficult to use. Just playing devil's advocate here, is there anything you do not like about the 510?
Any thoughts appreciated

Peter,
Thanks again.
Will have to find a
shop where they actually know about the unit and are willing to demonstrate so SWMBO can judge for herself. Found a display cabinet in DSE Superstore with all the units, none of which powered and no-one willing to have a go at firing one up.

Charlie,
Thanks for the reply. The 320 I looked at had the V6 maps loaded as
well as the CD. Would only be using it for main
routes to get where we want, have laptop and paper maps to get me into the more remote
places. Do you find the unit accurate for point to point addresses, etc?

I run the Navman 510.. I was going to buy the Garmin 320C. Lucky i didn't
The map on the 2 at the moment is now the same. But Navman will be releasing the new map in Early Sept. Then Navman will be ahead again.
One thing you have not considered are extra maps.
I intend n using
mine over seas. The Navman Maps for europe, Northern america and so on for other countries are far cheaper than Garmin and in more detail.
buy the new Navman 520. It's the way to go.
The difference between the ICN 630 and the 520 is the speaker and the screen under glare.
The glare is easy fix by a little bit of a tilt when in a glarey posi and i keep my unit down low in the drivers side corner so i can always hear it.
The 630 does have a better speaker but the down side is it only runs on 12V.
i can carry my Navman510 in my hand in the middle of a city.

Thanks for the reply.
I had thought the Navman maps were better but was just as interested in ease of use. SWMBO will be using it more than I and if it becomes fiddly to enter an address and get the unit to work then she won't like it and I will be in the bad books.
Again, playing devil's advocate - what annoys you most about the 510/520
Thanks

having used the Navman and the Garmin C320 the Garmin wins easily
the Navman is like a crude farm implement to the Garmin C320
comparing the maps for bush work the Garmin wins easily
Navman is missing heaps of roads and is wildly inaccurate in some locations

Thanks for the reply.
Was wondering if you could expand a little. What don't you like about the Navman? With regards the mapping, do you have any examples of where one wins over the other, just so I can get a feel of what you mean. Is there anything aobut the Garmin you don't like?

the quality of the hardware of the Navman is poor and returned 2 times for repair
the ease of use of the Garmin makes it a lot easier and quicker in operation
the maps on the current Navman are not as good as the Garmin
what makes matters worse the Navman denies you the use to use alternative mapping
The Garmin 320 allows you to load mapping from others and the complete 1:250000 is now available for FREE to load on to the Garmin

Thanks again,
I had read on U.S. postings about the Navman crashing and having to be restarted - not a good thing if SWMBO is using it!
I am still leaning towards the Garmin simply for the reliability and ease of use.
Will put up with the glare issue that has been mentioned also.

G'Day,
Went out with SWMBO today and bought a C320. Found navigating the touch screens easier than on the Navman range, even better than the 2160 model. Liked the 3D mapping as
well. SWMBO very happy. Thanks again for the reply

G'Day Charlie,
Went out with SWMBO today and bought a C320. Found it much easier to navigate the menu's than even the 2160 and certainly found it better than the Navman range. Types in
home address in the store to
check mapping, bingo, right to the front door
