Hi Rock Crawler,
Nelson Bay/Port stephens is a bit of a madhouse at Xmas and can be very expensive depending on what type of accomodation you want. But, great place to do things if you are into fishing and driving on beaches.
If you are thinking of coming this xmas book as soon as you can.
Camping at one of the caravan parks if probably the cheapest option or you can go right up to $3,000 - $5,000 for a waterfront place.
I would advise coming in Autumn if you can as a lot cheaper and almost as good as summer.
Cheers

I was there between Christmas and New Years 2004. It was busy as hell. From what we heard these
places are booked out years in advance. We stayed in a campground which had a seperate area that they didn't take bookings for but the sites in this area are tiny. Fantastic spot though.

We stayed at soldiers Point in a nice
park right on the
water next to a marina. At $18 per night ( in Feb) it was a good spot and not too far to drive from the dunes or other sights. It will be busy if it is not already close to being booked out already at Xmas.

I used to go up to Hawk's Nest with a uni club. We'd hire a house and wedge about 15 people in it. I think it was through First National at Hawk's Nest. But you've got to get in early, to get something at a decent price.
