G'day,

The fuel consumption on my 2002 HZJ105 (diesel) seems to be about 10% worse when running off the sub tank compared to the main fuel tank. Has anyone else found this? The only explanation I can think of is that the fuel return goes to the main tank only, and not to the sub - is that true?

That would be correct. The fuel return goes to one or the other - not both. I have a long range tank that replaces the original small sub - My recollection is that the return on mine is to the original main.

Are you sure about that? how can that be? if your main was full then the fuel returning to the main when running of the sub would overflow the main. Utes and 80 series have 4 solonoids 2 for both the sub and main (take and return) I cant believe it is different with a 100

Davoe, 93-98 Aussie spec petrol 80 models pump from Aux to main. I have not seen any utes with this same setup, but the only utes I have driven are diesel, not petrol.

I know little about petrols but I believe they take and return only from the main and the fuel is transferred from the aux to the main before it can be used (I could be wrong )
Diesals I know for sure as I have spent alot of time under them fixing lines., They have 4 solonoids. 2 for the supply from both the aux and main and 2 for the return again from aux and main. so the fuel is taken and returned to the same tank

I note the same on my HZJ105 sub, i have put it down to the gauge not having a trully linear movement over the whole range ie i can drive 120 km on the first 1/4 but by the last 1/4 of a tank i am lucky to get 50 -60 kms and my fuel light comes on before needle falls below E, always has since day one.

If the returning fuel was going to the main there would be overflowing fuel (when full).

Hi all. The return fuel always goes back to the tank that is being drawn from .This is controlled by solenoid operated valves in the supply and return lines, it is possible for wiring to be knocked off but as suggested this would lead to overflowing of one of the tanks when full.

solonoid problems are not unknown and can cause problems depending on where the fault is I have suffered a few and it varys from overflowing fuel tanks to the vehicle failing to proceed
