I can only shake my head when I watch this TV ad. What kind of idiot would drive through the bush the way they show the Adventura being driven? Downright STUPID, particulary the way they go BLAST out of the scrub, almost airborne to cross the dirt road !!! I can just imagine some urban rock ape buying one of these wagons, going out and doing just that, and launching right into the bullbar of a road train full of cattle... bet they dont show that on the ad.

Forget banning 4WD's. Start with Banning the kind of bleep drivers this Ad depicts, attracts and encourages.

I saw one of these V8 Adventuras tearing up the beach at double Island Point as if it was conrod straight. 20 mins later, we found him bogged to the arches in soft sand at Double Island Point last year. What a joke. No real recovery points, no recovery gear, no shovel, no idea about tyre pressure, in fact no idea about anything at all... We tried to help the bloke, but once we started asking about tyre pressure etc, he took offence and thought we were having a go at him . So... as he was safe from the tide and not really in anyones path, we left him there to dig and push..what an adventura he had.

Im sure to many of you, this is nothing new...enough soap box

Yeh I hear ya, seems u and I both sit there watching the add and thinking "how stupid is this". Anyway, as for the goose in sand...im sure he now realises u cant just wave ur magic wand and everything will work. Life is a learning curve....everything we want to do requires knowlegde. Shame the advertising gurus dont know this fact.

I'm of the view that all soft roader ads as they currently appear should be taken off air. I wonder how many manufacturers would honour their warranty if their vehicles where driven as advertised! I suspect none.

A half decent solicitor would use this to ensure they honour their warranty.

If a company (in this instance, motor manufacturer) makes public representations about their product, they are likely, by implication, to be liable.

I'd love to see it tested in court.

Rags,

I'm not sure all who buy them are silly fools. I holiday in a CP near a guy who owns one. He comes from a small country town where he fits home and business airconditioning split systems. He has until the purchase of his new Adventra just before Christmas 2004 used a Commodore wagon.

His main reason for buying the Adventra was the added ground clearance it offers over the standard wagon. He has a rear lane that has a hump in the middle and the old car was dragging its guts a bit, the new one doesn't. Also the all wheel drive ability of the Adventra helps a bit on the odd occasion when it does rain and he has to negotiate a slippery dirt road or farm track towing a rather heavy trailer.

He has no intention of ever going off road in the thing, he likes the luxury it offers and understands its limitations.

Now it's not the car for me or you from the sound of things but I would balk at calling him a silly fool for buying it. Oh and when things got ugly in the park last Jan due to some rather unpleasant weather he was a handy guy to have around, probably knows to take a shovel if venturing onto the beach in any kind of 4wd.

Yeah I gotta admit there are uses for these, even if it is not for what is advertised... I know a guy who owns a liquor store in the hills just out of Perth, he has a property with gravel (which turns to mud) track as a drive way and he carts quite heavy stock (including a trailer load often) up Green Mount hill reguarly, it's a long winding steep hill climb that in the summer is the funeral for many a car, ned alone one's fully loaded and towing. His last car (a jeep cheroke) blew a water pump towing the trailer up the hill and he didn't go "4wding" so this was his choice. For him I reckon it makes sense.

yep they would have been handy in my days on the EP we didnt have the excellent dirt roads found in Wa with many potholes and washouts as well as 6 inch deep gravel and skating rinks for roads when trying to drive the 100km for a footy game at Elliston

Hi,

I think the manufacturers of these vehicles walk a very fine line in misleading potential buyers about the true capabilities of these vehicles.

You see it in all of their ads whatever the make of car is.

The inexperienced buyer, could well and truly be sucked in by this.

Sometimes they will do anything to try and sell cars.

Have a good one.

How come there are so few of these Holden Adventra ( not "adventura") on the roads. I see more Ford Territorys` being driven sedately around the streets of Perth. Is it because they cant sell them as they are so darn useless. Nothing more than a glorified Commodore Wagon. I have no allegiance to either Ford or Holden so am not biased one way or the other. I drive a V6 4Runner and that serves my needs and requirements. The false and misleading ads that the car companies give showing these pretend 4x4s ploughing through the bush and on the beach gives us responsible 4x4 owners the reputation we dont deserve !!! These all wheel drive vehicle were never designed to be driven on the beach or any where else for that matter other than tarred or gravel roads.

There is a huge difference between an all wheel drive vehicle as compared to a full time/part time four wheel drive. Blame the greedy car salesman and the advertising companies for the problems, and disillusioned owners of their so called 4x4s . But back to the Adventra, they were so badly advertised, showing one trying to pull a boat in soft sand., What they didnt show you was the Adventra sinking to the floorboards. Now they have the louts screaming through the bush and getting airborne to get across the road. How stupid can you get. No wonder Holden are losing ground and laying off 1400 staff. As I said and will say it a again, I have no vested interest in either Ford or General Motors. I`ll stick to my 4Runner thanks.

I just wished that idiot on Double Point beach, was closer to the tide level!
The only way those morons are ever going to learn is when it hurts the hip pocket!!
But then again he'll just come back mumbling how crap the 4WD was, and trade it in for another soft roader of some kind!

Eric, if you take another look at that ad, and look at how holden are showing that car being driven through the bush, then blindly rocketing across the road... surely... you'd think its pretty ridiculous wouldnt you? I wonder if Holdens warranty would cover the vehicle if it were being driven like that? Dont try and compare the ants pants ad... (if its the one with the ant eater) thats good sensible advertising in comparison...

But its just a add , we all know thats not what to do , we also know that Hilux cant move cars down te street. If someone bought a car thinking its the best off roader from a add , they would be pretty dam stupid lol

All I am saying is that we have become real winges of late.

I cant wait to see a Advantura or Xtrail in Toolangi lol .

The ad is desighned to get people in the show room , that it guys . Now if the sales person told you that you can go anywere , and you can just this car ect , that s another story .

Cheers , take a chill pill sometimes lol

geeze people....it's just a gimmicky "role reversal" thing....and quite clever if you dont feel the need to take it litterally.

As far as Double Island point is concerned - you name a brand of 4wd or AWD that HAS NOT been bogged up there. We've been going up there for more than 30yrs and EVERY manufacturer has there products embarrassed. Furthermore - haven't you ever looked at the "honour board" of the Rainbow beach pub?

I bought my (HSV) Adventra cos I wanted full time all wheel drive for towing (2t).
It's absolutely perfect for what I wanted and a delight to drive. There are occassions when you find yourself towing on wet dirt roads, or wet slippery grassy slopes, or when your trailer may get a little sway up after hitting a pot hole on the highway - these are just a few of the times where AWD comes into its own and is a safety necessity.

If you think that lack of sales is a negative - think again. Of course they want to move more of these wagons so what an excellent bargaining position you are in. As far as seeing them on the road, fwiw, on a recent trip from Brisbane to Perth, we saw 4 Adventras, 4 Territories, and "millions" of F250's and Subaru Outback's.

I have no intention of trying to do things that you need a dual range transfer case to do. I have owned dozens of 4bies including Cruiser and Patrol and when I want to do stuff that requires a full size 4wd - guess what - I'll just buy one then. In the mean time I'm enjoying the fantastic power, handling and comfort of the Holden wagon.

Safe travelling people - what a great country we have for touring.

AVA, I know the Honour Board at the Rainbow Beach Pub.. and you are dead right. Doesnt matter what you drive, it matters more whos driving and how they drive . I'm sure you'd agree that there would be very few vehicles lost at the rocks if the drivers were making sensible and informed choices about when they should try and get around. 2 hours either side of low has always been fine, except maybe in cyclonic conditions. uncommon sense it seems.

I'm not really taking a shot at Adventuras. Just cant help but associate that Ad with the experience at DI last year. I'm sure if you saw what I saw, you'd have walked away shaking your head too. In 30 years of driving around DI, I'm sure you've seen plenty of idiots doing all sorts of stupid things, and in all makes of vehicles. I just dont like the way they advertise and the way they portray offroading. But hey, thats just my opinion.

As far as Adventras go, they have their place. An intended purpose. Sounds like you have a realistic grasp on exactly what that is. I just happened to comment on one person who didnt. I've read an article ( you may also have read it) about a couple of Adventras that crossed from West to East right through the centre, via Gunbarrel Hwy etc. They seemed to have handled that trip pretty well. They were driven by experienced and sensible drivers. I'm afraid that the bloke I saw up at DI attempted that one, well... he'd probably never be seen again.
