Managed to get a drive of the H2 Hummer while currently over in the USA, man what a beast. While it may not have the ultimate ability of the Humvee, it certainly has real off-road ability, built stronger than a truck and would have to be about the most capable production 4WD off the showroom floor. And it only costs ~US$53,000. Thats with 350 V8, 4 speed auto, diff locks, full leather, sun roof and a whole host of luxury items that only the Yanks could think off (like a built-in GPS that activates a rescue service if your airbags deploy).
It comes standard with truck sized recovery hooks, hitch recivers front and rear (for removable winch) and looks like its actually designed to be used off-road (even with all that luxury leather etc...)
As these sell 2nd hand for ~US$40,000 or less, got me thinkiing that surely it couldn't cost too much to ship one of these back home? Wouldn't be much more than a new GU and perhaps less than a 100 series TD cruiser. Now if only they came in RHD....
Another thing to make you cry, a fully loaded 4X4 dual cab F250 is only around US$30,000.
Cheers

The Hummer family may demonstrate good cross country ability when you select a rock climb that it can do that a LC cant , but how about a real life test . The Army sent a batch of Landrovers and a Unimog down the
Canning Stock Route . The Landrovers - no trouble , the Unimog's wider track had one wheel in a rut and one wheel cross country and it destroyed the drive train . Similarly , could a hummer do
Cape York where generations of standard 4WD's have carved narrow cuttings .Not bad in
the desert , but that is only one terrain .Standard 4WD's are practicle , the Hummer is a curiosity .

Dont mistake the H2 and the H1 The H2 is no were near in comparison to the original Military hummer. The H2 is built on a chevy chassis wth riggid axles , the original has IFS all round and idividual diffs in each wheel whith the lowest part of the car been the floor pan.
cheers
PS , you can also unbolt a wheel and wish bone set up and fit to any corner of the vehicle

Hey Captain,
I suggest you do what I am doing and wait about 12-24mths for the H3...thats right the H3 to be built in right hand drive for shipment to Australia from a new plant in South Africa.
The H3 is smaller again then the H2 and is getting all the same offroad prowess as can come from the Hummer stable. This H3 looks like a real competitor with Patrols and Landcruiser if they can get it here at the right price with the right fitment levels.
Go to the Hummer website (link below) and compare the H1 to the H2 and then H3...you will find that the H3 is about a 1/5 smaller again than the H2.
http://www.hummer.com/hummerjsp/home.jsp
Follow this link for a 360 degree view of the new H3
http://www.hummer.com/popups/h3/h3_3dspin_ext.html
Also go to the H3 microsite for a real experience of all thing H3.....click the offroad section and choose your terrain and the H3 goes ther along with an explaination of why, how and features. You will find the entry to the H3 microsite listed under the H3 title bar on the main Hummer site.

pretty sure, if i speak to him soon i will get back to this post, i do remember questioning the price with him tho and him reconfirming the cheapness of it so yes i think i have it right. Also it's not to far away either a year or something. I hate to think that a yankee tank is going to be better than a traditional aussie car, but in this age i think we live in a world market so we dont really have aussie cars, also i dont think we should advocate large crappy fuel inefficient american engines, i would love to see the new pug diesel from the D3 in the H3. Come to think of it, i wonder which would be better in a head to head off the road a D3 or H3.

Guys,
The current US price for the base H3 is around $29k and for the fully featured one about another $10k. I know I will be dumping my toyo100 as good as its been if this H3 hits our shores. Look at what you get as standard....this thing rocks. Have a play with the configurator on the H3 website as
well ....atleast to dream anyway.

Sounds good but for three main problems
No diesel - a rig that big NEEDs diesel to run even close to economically. Im sur ethe VORTECs run pretty good economy but 3.5L V8 pulling a 2.7t truck - (Just cant get that ole Landy donk out of my head). 3.5L V8 Diesel? Where do I
sign?
IFS - need more be said, it's even torsion bar IFS, not coils, I can come at coils but not torsion bars. Please Mr Nissan, don't kill the rigid axle 4WD or I might have to try and justify buying another Defender to the Minister for War and Finances
Towing capacity - 2045kg for the auto and 1360kg for the manual!! One can only hope that they will be re rated for Australian conditions.
All that being said I'd buy a H3 over a territory, Crewman or Adventra, Make it a H3 SUT (dual cab) and I'll take one NOW.

Hi there Captain,
I am curious of how you found the H2 to drive etc. I am just about to hand over the 100 series TD to the son and order a H2 later this week. I looked at the H3 whilst in canada a month ago and like another post I found the H3 only has petrol 3.5l and is a 5 cylinder motor not a V8 as suggested and only has 164Kw & 305 Nm.
A bit of a stepdown from the H2 & 100TD when towing 2.5 ton etc
Anyway I am interested on your thoughts on the H2

Hi Thommo,
The H2 is still a big, heavy vehicle. Even with a 350 V8, its acceleration was good, not fast. Its window area is extremely small so you have a very boxed in feeling and it seems big inside. As far as driving goes, it was very easy and I could easily drive it as an every day vehicle. Its ride was very good, not harsh at all. While it was easy to
park and fit in the big US lanes and
parking spaces, it would be another story in Aus. The owner said he got 10mpg around town and 17mpg on the freeway (US gallons obviouly, not UK gallons). The one I drove was fully loaded with every concievable luxury feature, right down to heated electric seats and sunroof (plus the obligatrory gun in the rear!!!). This one had the spare tyre in the cargo area. At 33" x 12.5", it took a LOT of room. I would definetly go the rear tyre carrier option. There is room for a 2nd battery if you juggle the radiator overflow, the alternator is about chest height, same as the air intake. It has been designed to actually go off-road, unlike most of todays 4WD's. It has huge recovery hooks front and rear (handy for an air-lift!) and winch hitch recievers front and rear.
But for the million dollar question, would I get one? You bet!!! Would not hesitiate to. The biggest problem (for me) would be its fuel consumption and sheer size, but if your driving a Hummer, who cares?
Cheers
Captain

Hi again Captain
Thanks for your input on the H2. As they say you do not buy a rolls and cannot run it because of the fuel. HA.
It should be on order by the end of the week, I will post more about it when it arrives.
Regards Thommo
