Hi all,
As I sit here watching "doc" (my Murray Cod) chase mudeye left over from 2 unsuccessful days trout fishing at Dartmouth around the
tank I was wondering:
How many people here keep Australian native fish at home?
I used to keep tropicals but went away from them due to high loss rates and maintenance costs. I bought "doc" as a 5 cm specimen from a pet
shop about 2 years ago and he is now a substantially larger 22 cm or so.
The kids (2 daughters) love him as he is quite attentive at times following fingers on glass, and they love going to the pet
shop to get him a bag of gold fish (much to mums disgust!). He loves shrimp when they are in season and I just drop the net in the river for a bit when walking the dogs to get those. Much cheaper to feed him in summer than winter. He's not keen on worms unfortunately - just leaves them to worm into the gravel where I guess they drown.
Keeping a cod has certainly taught me much about a fish I spend quite a bit of time fishing for (C & R of course) in the Murray &
Goulburn Rivers.
Do you keep natives - either in tanks or stock your dam with them???
If you do keep them and you travel for extended periods who or how do you look after them? I'm off to
Arkaroola for a few weeks in October and I'm not sure what I'll do.
Just curious.
Dave

Yea the local fish
shop used to have murray cod fingerlings and i had one for a while. started off feeding it mozzie larvae but then it started feeding of the scraps from the
turtle feeding............................ after a while it dissapeared and the
turtle stopped eating for a week hmmmmmmmmmm never did figure where it went. I also have kept native trout and some kind of freshwater flathead type thing i dredged out of a river pool but the axalotyl they were sharing with got sick and they ate its gills so they had to go

Dave,
Give the ANGFA [Australian New Guinea Fishes Association] a call : Tony : 03 9329 9292 [Victorian chapter] he will put you in touch with a knowledgeable member. Failing that the
Melbourne Zoo is also good.
I have left my natives unattended for 5 weeks, but they are in outdoor ponds which are heavily planted.
Trivia: If you are interested in natives, the next National Conference will be held in
Darwin!

I keep a marine
tank which I try and stock with local fish etc that I collect from
the beach. I have never been away long enough to worry about who will feed - normally only a week at a time and I buy a long life feeder block.
Do you have a friend who will collect the mail - have them feed him at the same.
I will pulling down my
tank soon as I will be moving and I will re-build it in about 6 - 9 months time once I have finished painting my house.
As a side does anyone know of any good websites for fish keeping / aquariums. Doing a Goggle brings up too many!!!.

For freshwater only
www.australianrainbowfish.com
Emphasis on
water plants & planted aquaria
Problem for you in WA is the very strict quarantine laws which will restrict your choices of livestock. Ring the number in earlier post for WA chapter of ANGFA.
Sorry can't help with marines. If you need more detail please ask :)
