I am at my wits end to find the cause and subsequent remedy for the serpentine belt in my 3.0 GU. I changed it out just last week and went through some shallow mud on the weekend. As soon as it hit the wet stuff the screaming banshee under the bonnet started again and only stopped during
water crossings at top of wheel height. I poured
water on the belt from the top and this stopped the noise for about two seconds. I washed the belt out at home with the engine running and I used a brass brush to try and get any grit out all to no avail. A can of WD40 on two of the pulleys was also used in anger to see if it was a pulley screaming and the noise subsided when I sprayed the fan hub area.
So my question is to people who probably know more about this than I do is what should I look for next or how can I go about silencing the banshee under the bonnet?

Try using a cake of soap, if possible hold against the friction surface with the engine running or spread as much on the belt as possible when stopped. Barnray

Had the same problem on my 3L GU.
Got some BELT Dressing from Super Cheap. After a couple of applications it worked.
Other solution is to get a new belt. $$$$

Redeye, it is a new belt and that's what's got up my nose. Might give that belt dressing stuff a go. I take it it's not Belt Grip? Tried that on the last belt and it didn't work.

Craig,
Check your belt tensioner. I went through the same process as you and after a close inspection, (I removed the fan shroud and stuck my head in as far as I could), I noticed that the tensioner was loose around the mounting bolts-worn. The tensioner was replaced under warranty and problem solved.

Craig,
The dressing is to help silence squeaks on V and flat belts.
It is "Series 500 Belt Dressing"

The worn belt-tensioner was the problem my mate had with his 3.litre Patrol several months ago. It's an alloy POS and cannot withstand the pressure applied to it by the belt.
I'm with Rob, take the shroud off and get your head down there (good idea to have the motor switched off at this time...;-))
It could be that the belt tensioner's pulley is stuffed.
Good luck

Just had same problem , tensioner pulley bearing was stuffed ( if it has one , was loose and wouldnt tighten ) tried to get just the pulley from Nissan , you have to buy the whole tensioner assembley , bracket tensioner and pulley.
About $300
Not hard to do , remove shroud and do from underneath.

what sort of noises were you guys hearing? I am getting a rattling noise as opposed to a rumble or a squeak.

Craig,
I had the same problem with my first GU, and it was the air con compressor clutch.
They are at the bottom of the engine bay where all the mud and
water will hit it.
Have a look at that, spray it with CRC or similar from underneath. If it stops the squeal you know you will be up for a few hundred $'s.
With luck it may be the belt, but I have never had a squeal on the GU until the air con went.
Good luck,
Geoff.

Thanks guys. Time to take the shroud off and have a really good look at what's going on. I'll keep you posted with the outcome.

It could be the air conditioner pulley...
... if it is, get a mortgage, it used to be a couple a grand to replace as you couldnt at the time repair them. Maybe its different now.

I have a similar problem....but in reverse - my steering belt howls like a banshee being nicked when it is wet/damp and I move the steering wheel to extreme left or right. Downright pain in the a@se.

Mine only squeels when wet or damp. I don't worry about it. I just turn up the radio.
