Hi all:
I want to fit my
UHF radio underneath my car radio (not the original Toyota one) and am wondering if I can remove just the centre part of the dash to access the space for the radios.
The vehicle is a 1991 80 Series Diesel GXL.
My vehicle manual seems to be telling me I have to remove the entire dash. Much too much work for what is mainly a cosmetic change.
Greatly appreciate your advice and input.

Thats correct. You have to remove both the top and bottom parts of the dash just to get at the radio. From memory there is at least three screws in behind the ash tray that have to come out and at least three or so other screws around the dash area. The rest is secured by push in clips etc. Also the cables for the Fuel Cap release and Bonnet release are fiddly.
I have a 91 GXL 80 Series and I have removed the dash twice - once assisted by my brother in law who is an auto electrician - and it is a pain. Just take your time and dont pull to hard.
I have added extention leads to both my radio and UHF CB which come out behind the glove box so that if I have to replace the aerials then it is a simple matter of removing the glove box.
Hope this helps.

To get to the section where the radio is, you only need to take off the one upper fascia. As mentioned, there are a few screws around the ashtray to undo. You shouldnt need to touch the bonnet and fuel levers on the pre-updated dash as you dont need to take off that lower panel or its screws.
It is a delicate operation removing the fascia from behind the steering wheel, but can be done with patience. When you have undone the screws and popped out the clips, disconnect the switches using the plugs on the back of them- I recall one switch/control on the right hand side of the steering wheel was easier to take right out rather than unplug- could have been the wing mirror control or cluster light dimmer. Again it takes patience to get it out from being wedged in behind the wheel.
When its out, there are 4x gold coloured screws holding the radio mounting plates onto the car- undo these, pull out the assembly and you're getting started.

Don't give up it is not all that hard it is just that the pieces are big. Follow Ben spoons directions and you should be fine. If it takes you longer than 5 minutes to do then you have deliberatly stopped for a coffee. It is literally a five minute job. Once you have worked it out th first time it is just so simple.

Yeah, agree. I have a Hilux and it sounds like the process is the same. Once you have spent the time to do it the first time it becomes easy and straight forward. For various reasons I have had the Hilux dash out about 1/2 a dozen times, can just about do it in my sleep now.
The only thing I would highlight above is take it easy, dont pull or pry too hard, and if you decide you need to lever don't use a screw driver, try something that is not going to mark, scratch or dent the dash (a piece of plastice should do). Pick a nice Saturday afternoon, have the footy on the radio in the background and a beer ready for when you finish, you'll wonder why you thought it was hard when you finish!!
Cheers

Just gob smacking!
I ask a similar question two nights ago about my 75 series and get bushwhacked by the Nissan Mafia.
Which I might add took all my skills in 'toyota defensive tactics' to fend off, and i still never found out what I asked in the first place.

Um thats a reeeely hard way of fitting a 2 way to an 80.
Mine is just screwed to the underpart of the dash with 2 screws and you can use double sided velcro if you dont like holes. As a bonus it is a 2 second job to remove it if the need arises

Thank you to all who offered help and advice. Got the job done. Took about 20 minutes to get it off, repositioned the radio, and about an hour to fit it back together again. Tricky things, those switches.
Thanks again
Jack
