To set the picture I have a mid 2001 GU 3 litre Turbo auto. In short the motor was replaced under warranty in mid 2004 (previous owner) blown piston at 78,000km under warranty. I purchased the car at 82,000 and have done the rest of the Kms to the present 99,000 km without missing a beat. Last week the auto appeared to be changing erratically and it had a flat spot usually when changing gear between 3rd and 4th. I changed the fuel and air filter thinking it was bad diesel but the problem is still there. Then I thought it was the transmission or an electronic problem. 2 mechanics have had a look at it and can't work it out (no fault codes showing). One mechanic contacted the local Nissan Dealer and was told that they presently have a patrol with the same thing and they don't know what the problem is. I think it is more an engine management thing. Has anyone else had or heard of this problem.

Try getting the transmission pressure tested and have the fluid and filter changed.

Auto’s are fairly complicated and any number of thing’s including engine related issues can cause a problem.

Air flow sensors play up big time on these pull it out and clean it in white spirits, nissan dealers fit new ones but they only need cleaning.

Although what ACDC says is true, if it IS the air mass sensor, the engine management light will come on. Also, depending on what has caused the AMS to play up, sometimes they cannot be cleaned, but, a good place to start.

Personally I recon its the auto box. Get it checked out ASAP. If they go too long with burnt fluid the whole thing can self destruct.

Couple of cars in same area - I would drain my tanks and get fuel elsewhere, and try that..

Call Rodney at Wholesale Automatics in Bayswater victoria.
He is a 4wder and what he doesnt know about Autos isnt worth knowing - he gets boxes from all over world to rebuild.... he may have some ideas.

Also airflow sensors are common to fail if the car has been used in muddy conditions.. another technological advancement

After 2 weeks at a Nissan Dealer they have told me the Turbo is the problem and needs to be replaced at a cost of $2000 to $2500. They claimed to have tried a new air mass sensor but it made no difference. New motor at 78,000 and turbo at 99,000. Rang Nissan head office didn't want to know about it. Have an extended warranty at a Ford dealership where I bought it they claim it is not covered under the warranty. Has any one encountered problems with the turbos on 3ltr deisels and does it sound like a turbo problem. I don't know where to go form here. Any advice would be appreciated.

Why doesn't the extended warranty you bought cover the problem?
