Live in Canberra and have a 2001 turbo diesel rodeo. It lives outside in the frost.
On frosty mornings you start it, warm up for a couple of minutes then on driving it rattles like a can of bolts. Stop down the road 5 minutes later, turn off engine for 20 seconds and bingo no more rattles, runs like a top. Any ideas why the rattle?

Is alpine diesel (5% kero or thereabouts) the default fuel as sold in Canberra during winter? I know from Williamsdale south it is..... but what about up there?

One of my mates brought a Rodeo a few years back and once winter hit it developed a rattle that would just go away after about 5 min.He rang Holden about it and was told it was something to do with a cold start up system. He still has the Rodeo and the rattle comes each winter and goes when the weather warms up(not needing the cold start system).Sorry carnt help more than that.

My rocky used to do that, I figured it a mixture of cast iron head and block with cold oil. Once the engine warmed up and the components expanded it was fine (well that's what I put it down to anyway). That's why I always warm em up before driving.

Course I could be totally wrong, but anyway, that old beast just kept going and going.

Had a 2H with ARB turbo that did that, wouldn't do it the second or whatever time it was started for the day, but when the owner left it with me overnight, made all sorts of rattles when first fired the next morning. Turned out to be one very tired oil pump, the dash gauge did not indicate that it was taking some time to get decent pressure, but when I conected my guage, it took a while to bring up the pressure. replaced oil pump, on restart pressure was great, so good it blew the oil feed line to the turbo in about a minute flat. Replaced the turbo lines and cooler lines and has not rattled on cold start up since. Does yours have a oil pressure guage or just a light on the dash, this might let you know. Also if yours runs a timing belt with an oil fed tensioner, they can make plenty of noise without proper oil pressure. Hope this helps. Let us know what you find.
