Hi all, I have a fj 60 landcruiser petrol 4 speed.
Not being too mechanically knowledgable, thought I would post the isuue here for comment. When in Hi 4wd all is good till I take the foot off the go pedal and experience what could be described as gear clashing noises, but only after say 20kph and only when i back off the power. Box and transfer has just been rebuilt because of this problem and the mech telling me my transfer was stuffed. Now I am stuffed coz it cost me $1500.00, and still have the noise. Could it be that little shaft from front diff to transfer??
Got real dirty today and got under the car and found a bit of wobble in the shaft bits. tried greasing it and found the grease seemed to ooze out of the end of the shaft (closest to the transfer case) and right at the end of the shaft, didnt know if this was normal, maybe excess comes out the end if too much is pumped in. To me it sounds nasty, like metal on metal, grinding type of noises, thus me forking out the big bucks on the box rebuid.
Any help appreciated.

Gordy

big chance it's one of your drive shafts,i would start there. check if the front shaft has a double uni joint on one end. i think the earler 60's had the double joint but later on toyoto changed to a single when thay tilted the transfer case down to save them selves money.

Hi Gordy, i am not to sure about the gear type sound however if you suspect the front drive shaft then it may be unbalanced usually at certain speeds due to a broken Universal Joint ($30-40 each) .
I just replaced mine tonight and it fixed a clunking sound i had as well as vibration at certain speeds--One of the bearings had completely discintegrated.

This was at the diff end, the other end (transfer case) has one too ,as well as the spline which has a grease nipple and may explain the grease oozing out as it just shoots up the spline and any excess comes out the end of the rubber boot.

Try replacing the UJ's first it will only cost you $150 to have someone put them in. While there at it replace the UJ's on the rear tailshaft as well.

p.s. get it checked for balance as well.

good luck

I'd be going back to the mechanic and asking how he came to the conclusion that you should rebuild the box and tranny !!

I would then ask him how much of a guarantee can he put down that he didn't just have a wild guess that this was the problem and, what is he gunna do about it considering the problem still exists after $1500.00 in repairs.

Fair's fair mate!

From here I recon you should get the diff checked out.

Being it is only in 4WD, I would think that the noise is coming from in front of the transfer case, as 60 series transfer case's are so simple it would be hard to get one that wrong. My advice is leave the transfer shifter in 2WD and lock both front hubs. Then get underneath and give the front driveshaft a hard rotaition in both directions(several times), listen for the noise from the pumkin and the axle ends(CV joints) also check for movement in either end of the shaft and the middle slip joint, by just bench pressing the entire shaft. Uncommon for a stuck unlocked 60 to wear out a front diff, but common for 60 series caravan towers to swap the diffs front to back after the rear is worn. Also common on 60's is to crack the CV joint open so it makes plenty of noise, but not disintergrate it completly so as to afect drive and steering to that wheel. Hope all this makes sense and gives you some help.
