Hi everybody
I have a HJ47 81 model ute( 2H) which I love and will keep but it needs major surgery. I found a 60 series wagon with the same 2H motor and a 5 speed box. It has only done 150,000km and I know the owner, servised at Toyota and one owner.
I could buy that one for a bout $8,000 and I'm thinking of taking motor and gearbox out to put it in my ute. What I need to know is if it all fits and would love to know what other Landcruiser owners think.
Thank you

Sell you a 2H and an unfitted ARB turbo for half that. But yeah, you may need to shift the cross member for the gearbox, other than that easy.

Sorry to take so long to reply.
Yeah I will sell the Turbo set up loose, would prefer to sell whole lot together. I am overseas at the moment, will be back some time before Christmas, if you can wait till then let me know.
Removeing the 2H either way as I will most likely be bringing back a brand new 8.1 Vortec Chev and Allison 5 speed auto to go in the 60, if the gearbox will fit.

To sell it separately, I would be looking for around a $1100.
I'm in NY USA at the moment, but will be back in
Melbourne VIC before christmas.

the motor is the same and drop in with your engine mounts but the box is a different kettle of fish.
with the box being a five speed your mount should work..... I said should work? but you will need different drive shafts and I dont think the 60 series shafts will fit. the good news is you should be able to use your own diffs though the the 60 series diffs have a lower ratio for better hy-way work.

Thanks for your thoughts everybody, I know it hurts to pull a car like that apart but I think its still a smart way to give the old beast a new life.
I have a talk to the mechanic and see what he says. Pretty sure thats the way I go.
Thanks again and drive safe
cheers

having owned a hj75 (which has pretty
well the same set up as the hj60) and now driving a hj47 i thing you could spend your $8000 in a better way.
i would rebuild your engine and rebuild the 4 speed box(and transfer case) in the hj47. to get an overdrive i would put a fairy overdrive in. this would end up costing you i think less than $8000 all up. engine around $4000, box and transfer case around $3000 and overdrive less than $1000.
that to me makes more sense because you then basically have a new drivetrain that will last you another 500,000 kilometres. i would rather that than a second hand motor and gearbox that has 150,000 kilometres and may need work done soon. especially the gearbox as they do have a tendency to throw 5th gear after 200,000 klms and that requires a rebuild.
from my experience the original ratios on the hj47 make for a quicker accelerating vehicle than the hj60 and with the overdrive installed you get the fuel savings of the overdrive.
anyway that is what i would do to my hj47 if i had the money.

Thanks for your thoughts Peter, I was told an engine rebuild would be very close to $8000 alone. Forgot to mention I score a power steering and AC as
well for that money plus the 5 speed box and keep heaps of spare parts after all that.
Who should I talk to regarding an engine rebuild here in
Brisbane?
I might have to do some more homework on this.
cheers

I once had a HJ47 ute with a fairy overdrive. It was better then a 4 spd on the fwy but not as good as a 5spd. (More like 4.5th gear.) I dont think it would be that hard to fit a 5spd out of a 60 or a 75series. If you are travelling on freeways, you'll never look back from a 5spd.

cant help you with regards to a
brisbane mechanic as i live in victoria. as for the price of the rebuild i would say a lot of it has got to do with how extensive it will be. also how greedy the mechanic is as
well.
