Had a Patrol advertised on the trader ads with a pic and stuff.
Only two responses/enquiries came from decidedly dodgey sounding emails which were written by individuals with a very poor grasp of the english language.
They don't appear legit, haven't read the ad properly and it's all decidedly sus.
I can't however work out why they would enquire if the aren't legit, or what they stand to gain other than my email address for a mailing list but that seems a cumbersome way of getting addresses.
Anyone know what's going on??
Anyone want a GU?
Dave

Hi Dave:
If they contact you and agree to buy, saying they will send you a cheque for more than the amount, watch it. You are then supposed to refund the balance, but the entire cheque will eventually bounce and they have your car and the balance.
This scam has been put up on this
forum before, and it may assist you to do a search ... "Scam" may find something for you. Certainly sounds "dodgey".
I would bring it to Dave's notice though, as he can check a fair bit of it out.
Jack

The scam has been around for a number of years now. This is how it works.
You get a reply to your ad wanting more details and best price.
You respond.
They come back to say it looks good and will it be OK to send you a cheque.
You say OK but nothing will happen until the cheque is cleared
They reply by saying that they will send you a cheque for double the amount as you must forward the balance to their 'shipper'...which is a fictitious person somewhere.
The cheque arrives and you bank it. Because of Australian Banking laws a cheque must be cleared within one week. But the full clearance takes a month
The cheque clears within a week.
You draw a cheque and send the amount to the 'shipper' of the vehicle
Nothing happens.
You send follow up emails. Still nothing happens and no one comes to collect the vehicle
A month passes and the bank rings you to say that the cheque has bounced. You now owe the bank for the cheque to the shipper, the dishonour fee and any other funds you have drawn against the cheque
YOU HAVE BEEN SUCKED IN !!!!!!!!
Recently I advertised my Toyota in the Trader section and received 7 enquiries. Six were from overseas and dodgy. The seventh was an EO Member who ultimately bought the vehicle.
Please advise David of the dodgy emails and he will block their addresses
Cheers

Geesus Rock Crawler.
Go and take a chill pill. Read a 4wd monthly or something. It isn't even my truck. Go read the ad if you want and you'll see I stand to gain nothing out of it selling. Just doing a favour for a mate.
There are still some people left on the planet who do something for nothing - then there are people like you that think everyone has an ulterior motive for everything.
Must be a miserable way to live.
Back to the topic at hand. Thanks to all the other replies. I suspected something was amiss and I'm pleased that my sixth sense is still working.
One of the emails I got read as follows:
DEAR SELLER,
GOOD DAY TO YOU.I SAW YOUR ADVERT THROUGH A SITE ON THE INTERNET AND I DISCIDED TO REACH OUT TO YOU IN ORDER TO PURCHASE SOME OF THE CAR PLACE FOR SALE.I WILL BE VERY GREATFUL IF I WILL BE GIVING OPPORTUNITY TO BUY THIS CAR FROM YOU.
I WILL LIKE TO KNOW THE CONDITION OF THE CAR AND I WILL LIKE TO KNOW THE LAST PRICE YOU CAN OFFER THIS CAR TO ME AND I WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I AM READY TO PAY FOR IT.
I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON AS POSSIBLE.
REGARDS,
MORRIS KELLY.
I've taken the advise and forwarded it to David.
Usual story I spose. If it seems too good to be true it probably is - and if it seems as dodgey as this it definately is.

Dave,
The email details that you sent have ben actioned and the users banned from the system. Also I have just updated the system to force people to be using a validated email account. In the past we allowed anyone to send the email now they will have to be a validated user this will hopefully kill off most of the spam.
Enjoy.
