I bet you petrol-heads are reading this! I've just read posts 26026 by Davoe about 'good' diesel engines and 26026 by Signman about the petrol/diesel debate. In answer to both; true diesels are a class of their of their own. The modern diesel has many 'bells and whistles' that make it perform more like a petrol engine therefore sacrificing it's natural talents. A diesel will run underwater as long as the air intake is 'in the heavens'. I recently moved to a property with a rather steep track(not as steep as other tracks I've been up/down). The owner took us up. Then back down in 1st low, no brakes, in a 2.8 Hilux diesel. A friend with a 3.5 petrol Landrover came down in low 1st with brakes. My 80series in low 2nd no brakes.
Well sure that means the gearing is low but you drive the vehicle that way.How often do you drive behind a vehicle blowing smoke and think that they're driving their 4wd's like sports cars? Trying to drag off the Falcon beside you may be commendable especially as your 4wd weighs twice as much. driving a diesel at appropriate revs and gear changes brings a relaxed attitude to driving (unless you're younger than 40!)

yeah, and some more.
That's the point Davoe, if you want a 4wd that's practical, our choices will be limited. You will have to buy 2nd hand if you want a vehicle that is purpose-designed; ie no crappy interior lining that thwarts vacuuming, the under-hood 'less is better' concept, '
barn doors', etc. If you want a utilitarian vehicle the choices are limited and may be non-existent in the future.

Horses for courses . Ill show you a couple of tracks that Diesels dont have hope in hell on . Ill also show you conditions that diesels will do better at .
Petrol / diesel....... Nissan / Landcruiser debate is a Joke . In my view , can only exist with people with tunnel vision. Every trip is diffrent , every vehicle has it good and bad points. Diesel and Petrol both have good and bad issues and i could write pages on both.
Enjoy thje car you have and learn from your own experience and from those around you .
If he all drove the same car with the same engine , we woudl turn on each other about the best colour jocks to wear in the bush

You ought to be ashamed of yourself putting that 'red thing' on the
forum as a 'rig pic'. You know better.

Actually Blue has a larger following and also covers its tracks better, even the ones that would eat a IFS Korando. Youo know its not the size of the fight in the dog, its the size of the lift in the 4b. Life will always be a thing of compromises, as every Toyota owner knows.
If it had not been for 2000 measly dollars I would have bought an 80 series and been bagging (hush now) Nissans probably... the point is, as Rock Crawler says there are tracks that a Petrol does better on and others that a diesel excels on, the thing is that Toyota's will always do
well on tracks that Patrols have already done.
The arguement isnt about makes but tyres, batteries,
suspension, the grass on the other side of the fence, oh and goats.....dont mention goats, them and feta.

Excuse my ignorance Rock Crawler, but what sort of track could a petrol possibly do better in than a diesel? I can't think of any situation where having to maintain high revs to keep power/torque on is an advantage? Please enlighten me?

Well if you have a slipery incline were you have no traction , you need momentum to keep you going, the revs of a petrol will be far more superior to a diesel .
hows that ?

Rock Crawler,
You are totally right. I'm not saying diesels are better, it definitely is horses for courses(said the horse of course!). My angle was specific needs; base models, no turbo, vinyl inside, 4l+, minimal electrics for it's advantages, no need to drive fast, etc, etc, and Davoe's post was specific too. My point is that if you don't want electric windows, synthetic inner lining, and anything else that falls into the 'more is better' catagory, the vehicle options are very limited.

Don't see what you're all on about.
If you want a brand new "commercial" 4wd, then go out and buy one.
Take your pick - Toyotas have 78series Troopies, 79series cab chassis, and 105 series
barn door. The 78/79 have a choice of 3 different motors.
Nissan have the DX patrols - both wagon and cab chassis.
All the above are part-time 4wd and have rigid front ends.
Theres never been more choice.
Don't be distracted by the bells and whistles models. Just go out there now, and buy a BRAND NEW 4wd.
Cheers

Well, far be it from me to go on about something, but, if I specify a wagon(there's more than two of us in the vehicle) there is only a Toyota or a Nissan to choose between from a plethora of 4wd vehicles(I know, it makes it a moot point since they are the best cars on the market anyway!). But, if I wanted to be patriotic and buy a Holden, as Australian as they are, the option isn't there! I stated that the range was limited; I consider 2 or 3 vehicles out of hundreds to be limited, but maybe my understanding of the word 'limited' is limited!

I think you are right bware.
But I think this applies in lots of areas.
For instance if you need six seats but don't want a wagon or a 4x4 you are stuck with the people mover range. I hate people movers, they have their place, just not in my garage. What I really miss is the six seater family
sedan. Whatever happened to the front bench
seat? I mean the Kingswood is just about on it's last legs and there is nothing to match it on the market these days. Give me a six seater three on the tree any day. :-)
