hey all
i have a 99 gu patrol 2,8 td with 350 kms on the clock & am wanting to keep the truck & up grade the engine, i tow my daily work trailer about 1.5t ish most days, pending on tools, & weekends my boad just over 2.4.ton
ive looked in to the chev 6.5, 6.2 liter engines & would like to know & seem to offer good performance & realibilty, but are there any other engines that would be reccomended that offer good power with ok economy seening that i do work up the ks during the week
i have recently just started hearing about the cummins diesel engine 5.9 litre? has any one got one of these or can it be put in to the patrol?
i know the lodgical thing to do would be to place the 4.2 td in it
ps am keeping the patrol but after spending so much on $$ on it on mods i am keeping it?
cheers

Adam,
I would be going with a Chev motor to start with, or talk to fitters of these and see what they could for you as regards fitting a 4.2 TD from a Patrol.....a lot of blokes only put the Chev in cos of the glamour factor and their 4.2 is still okay. However, which ever you choose, I believe you are gunna have to source a new gearbox (from a 4.2) as the 2.8's box is not gunna be able to cope with the extra grunt.
Haven't heard anything of the 5.9 Cummins, sorry
Cheers

Diff ratios will need changing to lower revs as
well, or run larger tyres to compensate. :))

Most logical change would be 4.2 plus gearbox and diff centres from the same wreck. With the 2.8's diffs, any other engine will be spinning it's tit's off and therefore fuel consumption is going to be horrendous. The cost of the Chev diesels will make the swap uneconomical, would be far better to use the same dollar value and update your investment. The Cummins is simple too large, too expensive and only like max revs of 2500 rpm (again the diffs will ruin it)and auto only. Think I'd be tempted to do a fastidious rebuild of the 2.8, match porting, flow bench work, the works, soup up the blower, open the exhaust, injectors and pump up and fit a larger intercooler, perhaps liguid cooled, then leave the rest of the driveline alone and standard.

Can't put a CUMMINS 5.9 ISB engine into a Toy or Nissan coz the drivetrain can't stand the torque or power.
BTW, the 5.9 revs to 3500 RPM, gives 235hp and 610 foot pounds of torque.

You'd need to do the number crunch $$$ on the conversion as opposed to selling and buying another vehicle. Don't forget the insurance changes or if it's allowed with who ever you are currently insured with to do the conversion.
Sounds like it would be easier to sell the 2.8 Patrol as is and buy the vehicle you need.
