WE HAVE JUST PUCHASED A 94 GXL 4500 MANUAL PETROL 80 SERIES.WE GOT IT FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER AND ONE ITEM THEY REPAIRED FOR RWC WAS THE REAR ENGINE SEAL.WE HAVE HAD IT A WEEK AND A HALF AND I THINK IT IS WEEPING A BIT.WHEN I PUT MY FINGERS UP THE INSPECTION SLOT I GET A BIT OF OIL ON MY FINGERS,BUT NOT ENOUGH TO LEAK ON THE GROUND.MY LOCAL MECHANIC SAID NOT TO BE TOO CONCERNED AS IN MANY CASES A REAR SEAL CAN BE REPLACED ON A PERFECTLY GOOD SHAFT AND STILL GET SOME WEEPING.HE RECKONS TO KEEP AN EYE ON IT AND IF IT DOESNT DEVELOP ANYMORE THEN A WEEP IT IS ACCEPTABLE.THE MOTOR HAS 258K ON IT.ANY THOUGHTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.THANKS

I have the same problem with a 94 Nissan but the 'new' seal is leaking more than yours and has to be repaired for the 2nd time. My truck had 285,000 when I had the seal replaced. I am not happy and the workshop is trying to wriggle out of a free repair.
Your mechanic is right though. maybe you will be lucky enough and it will not get worse.
By the way....It is considered to be rude to type in capitals on the internet as it is equivalent to shouting!

Hi my 80series has a simular problem but not enough to drop on the ground. Justs makes the transfer case a bit dirty. I don't worry about it. I just clean the transfer case accosionally

Mumwith2,
No oil weep is acceptable. They have done a shoddy job. You're the one that will pay out again in the long run, and then they will say sorry its out of warranty. They are trying to duck shove you because it a big job with the gearbox having to be removed etc.
Get them the fix it, go to your consumer protection mob.
I have the same motor in my troopy. A couple of years ago it had the same problem, was fixed and has never weeped or leaked since.
PS: Do you realise that typing in capitals means you're shouting.

Hi
The seal needs replacing...sooner or later it will leak worserer...the problem is the seal is $80 from Toyota and fitting it costs $500. when you next change the oil, put some around that area, and have the seal replaced under warrenty... it jst makes less hastle for you proving that it is bad enough....any leak is bad....for the enviroment and bike riders/road users alike...
Pay for a new clutch whilst its appart. Get a Daycan and supply it to them.
Ask for the old one back.
Andrew

Mumwith2.
I too have a 94 GXL 4500 . It has now 275000km and had the rear main seal replaced at 225000km, may 03. I bought it at 253000km and it was leaking slightly then and since then has not got any worse. I have worked with 3 Toyota techs over the las t couple of years and they all tell me that the 1fz-fe engine is famous for the rear main seal leak and if replaced quite often leaks again. I am not concerned about
mine. will replace if clutch replaced but till then the leak is so minor it's not a concern, the swaybay gets a little wet and hardly a mark on the carport floor after near 2 years.
Regards
Greg
