My wife and I have just decided to pack up and travel Australia. We are at the stage of searching for a towing vehicle and pop-top van. I am leaning towards an 80 series, manual turbo diesel landcruiser towing a 16ft pop top. I would like to know the fuel consumption of this series landcruiser when towing. Is it best towing in 4th gear? With the recent rise in fuel costs, would towing with a 2wd vehicle be cheaper to run or would towing a caravan of this size with a 2wd not be appropriate.? *Thanks*

It'l pull that size van with ease and with fair economy if you do not go over about 95 k's. I would advise towing in 4th as 5th is an overdrive however some tow in 5th.
Also a 2wd Falcon or Holden would also tow it easily with probably similar economy again depending on speed.
With a 4wd you have the advantage of added safety in slippery conditions and the ability to leave the van at a
park and go onto beaches and 4wd tracks to explore etc. It's all horses for courses.

hi there i have the anaversary model 80 series no turbo and i get 10 ltr 100k no van
and anything from 18/23 ltr per 100 ks but i tow an 18ft brick and small boat on car so you should get a lot better with a poptop oh and i do use 5th gear on open roads only up to 4th in towns and we have traveled
well over 20 ks with this car &van
Also there was a hiclone fitted to the car when i got it and as the add will tell you i get 10% extra power at the flywheel and 10% at the left wheel or is that the stearing wheel { go the clone}
And i put extractors on it but still using the old exhaust untill that wears out
