Hi guys! Thanks for your info Dodger. When the time comes to buy 80 series T/D landcruiser, anything in particular I should be looking out for? We will also be travelling with our 12 month old daughter, do you think a 16ft van will be sufficient or should we go for something slightly larger?

I am told the later model 80s T/D is a better engine than the early one, but you would need to ask someone with more knowledge than me. I recon a 16 foot van with your rugrat would be OK, but I don't have kids, and I'm used to
camping in a smallish Jayco windup, so I'm used to smaller spaces.
Before doing the big trip I strongly recommend having the vehicle thoroughly checked over by someone who does this for a living (try the yellow pages for trip preparation/repairs) and be prepared to spend a little $$$ on things like wheel bearings, radiator repairs, brakes, hoses, belts etc. Better to have a good holiday in safety than have a holiday soured by breakdowns caused by little things that could have been avoided.

Two words..."big ends"
Be careful with big end engine bearings. There is a huge amount of information on this subject. Start with the landcruiser cool website - www.lcool.org, also lots of achived posts on this
forum.

Two other words URBAN MYTH ,, if go to lcool ,toyota , ect ect you will find was only 1 bad batch of bearings , were possible only in Feb 90 thru to Aug 92 ,, if not fixed by now then the vehicle has lived in a museum or did not have a set of the dud bearing to begin with ,,, bit like the KNOWN FACT that 3lt patrols will all blow up at 100,001 ks. LOL.

Sorry Alloy c/t, but you are slightly wrong. The bearings that caused the problems were in vehicles from 90 throgh to late 94.
I know cause I have a 10/94 cruiser and have had the problem, and yes Toyota came to the party even though this happened in May 2002 and the vehicle had done 166K.
Not trying to be picky, but the person who posted the question needs to have as many facts as possible, especially if his budget only extends to an earlier model 80 series.
The bearings should have been replaced by now, but ?????????

Pump the accellerator on and off when cruising in 5th- if it pops out of gear be wary of looming box repairs. check the lcool.org website or old 4wd monthly mags for buying tips.

Johnny, I think they are a great vehicle (even if I am biased). Stick to the 24valve model. If there are no oil leaks you should be fine by having a full service done prior to your trip. Replace belts, hoses and check radiator and then you should be fine. I'm on my second 80 Series and although my current one is over 10 years old I have not found any problem areas. I have had the injector pump 'tweeked' on the dyno for better low rpm performance and it was the best $300 I ever spent.
Happy hunting - finding a nice one is hard but they are still out there.
I have travelled with two
young ones in a camper trailer so I believe a 16' van will be pure luxury for you.
Regards
