It's illegal in SA. It's called bait advertising, might be worth a phone call to Consumer Affairs.

From Office of Fair Trading:

Bait advertising
Bait advertising is a way of encouraging customers to do business with you by advertising goods and services at a price which will attract them. In instances where there is a limited amount of the product which is not anticipated to meet demand, customers are 'switched' to higher priced products once stocks run out. This covers items 'on special'. The Fair Trading Act allows this practice provided that you can provide a reasonable quantity of the product for a reasonable time. What is reasonable will depend on the type of product, that is, expectations would differ for washing machines and handkerchiefs. You must have adequate supplies at the time of advertising or make it clear that there is a specific number of supplies available. If the offer is for a limited period, state this clearly in your advertising. If stocks are genuinely low, such as in a clearance sale, say so. If demand is greater than anticipated, check whether your supplier has extra stock that you could offer to your customers at the same price at a later date. Or, if you and the customer agree, you could provide an equivalent product at the same price or the same product at a later date but at the advertised price.

I just got my catalog 5 mins ago and on the back in the tiny fine print:
"All effort will be made by repco to ensure that advertised stock is available for the duration of the sale, but cannot be held responsible for the unavailability of such products by shipping delays, short delivery, quality control reasons or suppliers failing to deliver at all or on time."
Ba5tards! I will be buggered if I will shop there anymore

Call the head office and mention you have called 6 different stores, with none having supply.

Mention Bait advertising, and ask when they expect them to be in stock. see where ya get.

What about the in dash player.....$99 pre clearance $1260...cough cough choke. Actually I thought pre-clearance as the describe it would mean these things are already in stock and they want to off load them.

Yeah gotta get away soon

I'm going in to the Campbelltown store tomorrow morning to buy one of those "new technology" fridges. I'm going to demand a dvd front-end and screen - and THEN pull out my 20% discount voucher.

Next time go into the store just before closing the day before the big sale and make sure they have them available. Make sure the register is closed or make up some bull about how you don’t have the money on you now so you can’t buy it today. But if you come in tomorrow (Day of the sale te te te) is there be plenty in stock/ available.

If answer is yes show up as soon as the store opens and request you $99 DVD player/ screen.

See if they can weasel out of that one.

We went down to the Campbelltown store at 8:00am and there was a lineup at the counter. Lots of angry customers - all of whom were on their phones to ACA, T/T, Consumer Affairs, etc, etc. They had NO units but claimed that there were 1,100 around Australia to be sold. They simply pointed to the bottom of the page at the disclaimer and looked dumb. Customers in the store rang every other Repco store between them and only the Ulladulla store (or somewhere near there) had any - 2 units that were sold at 8:01am. So where are the other 1,098?

Repco - "REPutable COmpany" of the past is now "REPrehensible COmpany" of the present. Unbelievable.

Given the number of calls to the evening current affairs shows - and knowing how hungry for material they are - I'm half expecting to see it on telly tonight.

As predicted - arrived right on 8.00 - 10m line up - small table set up with a couple of items - all sold by 08.00 and 10 secs. Was after a LCD screen - none available at all. There did seem to be plenty of speakers but not much else.

Items are all store clearance stock so if wasn't in the store then none was ordered in.

Went to another store - more stuff - but all sold by 08.15 - did have one LCD screen - first to be sold. Again stuff on a small table - one guy didn't have enough money and wanted staff to hold while he went to the bank when they opened at 9 - no way would they hold anything - again main stock seemed to be speakers and a few Radios/DVDs.

Can understand limited stock and all the conditions but then these items should not have been advertised in a national cattledog. Maybe locally and only for available stock.

Here's my "contactus" message to them. I'll let you know what they say.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'd like you to remove any reference to my name in your comapany files, and no longer wish to receive any mailed catalogues. Your bait marketing scam today ($99 video screens and DVD players) has angered myself (who turned up with dozens of other people this morning at 8:00am in Campbelltown) and many others on various motoring-related internet forums that we all want nothing to do with what used to be a respected and trusted company. Your marketing manager deserves to be taken to task over this event. Why put up these products on the front page of a national catalogue if you knew full-well that there were literally none to purchase? To cover yourselves by pointing to a disclaimer at the bottom of the page is downright unjust and unworthy of an Australian company. From what has gone around on the internet, we can account for two units in Ulladulla - which were both sold at 8:00:01am this morning. The manager at Campbellton stated that there were 1,100 country-wide. No-one believes you. We stood outside the store afterwards with at least a dozen fuming ex-customers who were all on their mobile phones to the ACA, Today Tonight, the newspapers and radio talkback stations. They were all calling foul play and that the catalogue's front page was designed purely to draw people to an un-obtainable bargain. Shame on you.

I sincerely think the you were once a REPutable COmpany - now you are a REPrehensible COmpany.

Please remove me from your mailing lists. All of them.

Next time your company's marketing team dreams up a scam like this you will lose even more customers. Here's hoping.

Bitterly dissappointed

ex Repco customer of 20 years.
