Muddy 'doe (SA)
Hi all,
Recently bought a Uniden UH075 5 watt Handheld UHF.
The radio looks the goods and I will be giving it a workout over the next few weeks on upcoming trips however I have a question concerning power. I need to be able to recharge the thing in the vehicle but can only use 240v. I have an inverter but as yet it is not installed and is a bit of a pain to set up. It would be much easier while driving to be able to use a ciggy lighter adapter in the same way as I do with my Mobile phone.
The Radio has a custom Lithium Ion Battery that fits into a fairly bulky drop in charger. The charger accepts 12 volt DC from an AC Adapter but the guys at dick smith tell me it is a weird size tip. They say they may be able to build me a custom cable.
Can anyone with this radio tell me if they have found a 12 volt cable that fits?? Or advise how they charge on the go.
Cheers
Muddy

Hi Muddy
The other option would be to purchase a smaller inverter that plugs into a cig. lighter socket.
You could use this for video chargers, 240v shavers, and similar.
You can get them from Jacar from about $50

Hi Muddy, I have just got one & for an extra $50 I got a 12v lead. It is simply a lead for cig lighter to a plug that plugs into the existing charger.
Do you use the standard aerial when in the car or an external one? I am thinking of trying an external aerial to give better range.

Hey Muddy
Dont make a simple job look difficult.
I have one that I charge off the vehicle 12V in the cradle I will check when I get home exactly what I have done, but I believe it is simple as.
Check the output of the 240v charger I think it was 12V so I simply got a plug from DS that pluged into the cradle and wired it into 12V
Will confirm later

Hi Muddy
Yep as I thought
A plug from Dick Smith into the cradle and directly wired into 12V, my cradle is permanently mounted in the car

Hi there Muddy 'doe, mate I just looked up your rig profile sounds pretty
well set up only one question, why did you go and buy a hand held uhf when you already have 1 in the 4by before buying the cargo barrier. I didn't see the hand held on your wish list. I hope you don't have kids in the back ???? Maybe you should have a read of post 26181 Regards Vitara Ps please dis regard if you have bought one but just havn't updated your rig profile
