Where do you carry a large tent?

I'm looking at buying a large centre pole canvas tent (something like an Oztrail Tourer 10 plus) and was wondering how others transport theirs. The pack size is almost a metre square so it won't go into the back of the Disco with the fridge and other gear. I have a roof basket which will take it but if there is a cleverer solution I'm very interested.

Also if anyone's got a tent like this they want to sell let me know (I've posted a Wanted ad in the Trader section)

Before I got my campertrailer, in my roof basket I had a roof bag for sleeping mats, chairs, and a couple of other lightish items, then I'd throw my Freedom tent, in its plastic cover, on top of that and then strap it down.

You lift that sucker up and down for a few weeks and you find some muscles that haven't been used for a while.... then back to civilisation to lose 'em again.

Thats what I've got now- even when Im not using the tent the canvas makes a nice weatherproof cover for gear on the roof rack. I have not had to get a roof rack dust proof bag because of the tent.

Have a false floor made up so the tent will slide underneath, if you can, make it high enough to fit your table as well. Then the fridge and everything else goes on top.
It does make the fridge a bit high but at least when you get to your camping spot you can get to your tent without having to unload the rest of the car to get to it.
I've done this to my GQ and because I have to remove it every time I get home I haven't bothered to get the plywood false floor covered in carpet. I also finished the
frame/plywood before the rear door to allow the tent poles to lie down across the back.
Regards Andrew.

I have it the other way - with the fridge on a slide sitting at floor level and a shelf over the fridge. The tent / table / swags etc sit up top. This still allows easy access to the fridge. Just an idea...

Must be a big bog roll! lol

We had a GU before the disco and packing was much easier but now we just take less stuff that never gets used.

I think with the Disco you have no other option other than the roof. If you have a cargo barrier fitted I don't think you have a metre in length, whicj means the door won't close. A simple check with a tape measure will confirm. Othrewise the false floor is the best option.

G'day Adrian,

I have a 10 Plus (great valus so far,) and a 90 Prado. The tent fits beautifully standing up, the last item to go in before the rear door is closed. If you have taken it down properly it will pack quite flat. It is usually the last item I would pack anyway if leaving camp on a dewy morn, due to letting it dry for as long as poss. Have you tried it with the Disco or do the measurements look like it won't fit? If you have kids then yeah there is not much room in the cargo area of the Discos.
btw - you can get a 10 Plus for about $350 on ebay.

Hi Adrian

I believe the OZ tent people have a small pod that fits on the roofrack to hold their tents. Am not sure of the price though

Thanks everyone for you suggestions. The roofrack is the most likely end result. The vertical option against the door wont work because the fridge is hard up against it already and the floor length is ony 900 below the shelf anyway.
