G'day - 3 blokes, 6 days, a 4wd and
camping gear, not a lot of experience, starting point
Cairns. Thinking of heading west to
Lawn hill area, or alternatively if time permits to go North to the Cape. Would appreciate any comments from experienced travellers as to which would be best, given time of year, low experience, etc. Travelling Dec 1-6, 05.

Not a lot of time up your sleeve. A look around Lakefield NP, in from
Cooktown may be worth considering.
You probably wouldn't get much further North, and may not even get there during the wet.
In hindsight, maybe
Lawn Hill would be a better option.
Cheers

Little experience, very little time, wrong time of year. Do yourselves a favour, go Cape Trib to
Cooktown stopping at
the Lions den pub. A few days in
Cooktown, get on a charter boat fish the reefs a couple of nights. Hire a boat and fish the Endeavour River(good time for barra) call in the lions den on the way home. All safe and sound, 4x in one piece, everyone happy, More time and a different time of year do the Cape or Gulf. Remember somethings in life shouldn't be rushed. Happy
camping

Spend the time doing a 4WD training course or tagalong tour. This would be infinitely better than travelling solo (as in one vehicle) with little experience should something go wrong.
Then next time you can go properly prepared.

I second TonyF's idea - great
camping at the Lions Den and the beer is cold and great company.
