Just out of spite, I went into REPCO Mitchell this morning and asked about some of the specials, the good ones for $99.00. Guess what none in stock. Says I "you must be having a great sale if you sold out already on day 2".

The sheepish look was too hard too hide.

To be fair guys - a large Repco store in my local area had more than 60 customers waiting for the doors to open yesterday morning...and no I don't work for them but do underestand the problems that the people in the regional stores face when the head shed make collosal errors of judgement like they have on this occasion.

You could always ask them how many of the super special items they had for sale, there have been many ACCC actions against companies only having 1 item of the really hot itme just to get people into stores.

They usually dont like people discussing ACCC with them and possible breaches of it.

Just a thought if you really wanted somethign espicially that $99 DVD setup.

I think on the Overlander forum it was determined that there were only 2 of the "$1299 reduced to $99" units available for sale in the COUNTRY.

Bait advertising at it's worst. They deserve to be fined by ACCC or Consumer Affairs or whomever for this. If you went along and missed out, contact Consumer Affairs in your state. They need their ar$e kicked for this campaign.

Rang around to 6 shops." No stock", "sorry we only had a few", " sold out yesterday".
Then I remembered that my son had a friend who worked for Repco, got him to ring his mate. Answer, "we never had any and we don't know any stores that did"

Check out this site and put in a complaint

I just sent the below comments to REPCO on the above repco tip site

Add Your Best Tip
Home > Auto Mechanic Tips > Add Your Best Tip
Please fill out the following:
First Name*
Last Name*
Email Address*
(Name and email address required so that we can acknowledge your contribution)
Now what was that Tip?:
Don't shop at REPCO for anything other than specific vehicle spare parts
Repco built their IMAGE on this alone (specific vehicle spare parts)and have done a great service to the motoring public over many years

Now, the bean counters have made them sell WILL YOU HAVE FRIES WITH THAT equipment that is not in their field of expertise

But the sales team do know a good bargain (READ BAIT to get you into the store)and I now understand why there was not one good bargain (READ BAIT) available at 8.01am for sale to the NATION wide advertising campaign that had only one function and that the was to get you talking about a sorry firm like REPCO

Scams like this make my blood boil.

I just sent this to RipOffCo via their website.

-------
The sizzling sound you're hearing is not from your latest catalogue "Hot Deals" - it's coming from LOTS of people who are really annoyed about what is obviously bait advertising.
The catalogue arrived this morning - I rang all the metro stores in Perth - got the "sorry, sold out" message. Then I read the posts on the ExplorOZ site and surprise, surprise --- everyone in Australia who tried has got the same answer. Except of course the bloke with a MWWFR (mate who works for Repco) who apparently said there were only a couple of the big-ticket items for the entire country.
I will of course wait for your considered response before deciding whether I should lodge a complaint with WA Fair Trading and the ACCC.
In the meantime I will get my parts for the "Long Weekend coming up - Fix The Cruiser" project from Oxford Spares.
--------
I know they'll ignore it, but it made me feel slightly better.
Roll on Sept26 - Newman bound :-)

The ACCC say in a case against Crazy Johns Telephone company;
Mobile promotion: misleading, bait advertising

Mobileworld Communications (Aust) Pty Ltd has given the Federal Court undertakings after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alleged it used misleading and deceptive conduct and bait advertising in a mobile telephones promotion.

The ACCC had alleged the conduct occurred in advertising in a Crazy John's newspaper advertisement placed by Mobileworld on 2 July 1997 featuring the NEC Sportz Digital, the Ericsson 218, the Nokia 2010 (incorrectly described as model 2110) and the Motorolla 1-888 for sale at $49 with a connection fee of $65 and 12 months access at $20 per month.

At the time of the sale the company had either none or limited numbers of the advertised phones at each of its 10 Crazy John stores. In settling the proceedings, the company gave undertakings to the Federal Court in respect of future advertising and consented to court orders.

They stipulate that the company will not at any time advertise digital cellular telephones at a special price unless reasonable efforts are made by the company to have sufficient stock at each of its relevant stores referred to in the advertisement. The company also undertook to detail the actual number of units held by a store where less than a specified stock base is held at a store. Further the company will maintain a 'rain-check' policy.

In addition to the undertaking provided to the Court, the company consented to orders requiring it to: maintain a trade practices corporate compliance program with annual reports to the ACCC; place within seven days a public notice in the Herald Sun newspaper acknowledging insufficient stock was held and apologising for any inconvenience to persons who responded to the advertisement and/or were not supplied with one of the four advertised telephones; and pay the ACCC costs.

In the case at hand, the company found itself without sufficient stock, when an order for discontinued phone models, placed the day before publication of the advertisement could not be filled by the company's supplier. The ACCC acknowledges that Mobileworld, when informed of the ACCC's concerns, did act to contact and compensate customers, who purchased a more expensive telephone package than that advertised.

The matter was a clear reminder to companies of the need to ensure sufficient stocks are available before advertising a sale item and to ensure that a policy to provide a 'rain check' is in place,' ACCC Chairman, Professor Allan Fels, said today. 'It is important to get things right before an advertisement goes to print and in the event that something goes wrong, to have in place procedures to either satisfy demand through a 'rain-check' (ie offer of later supply) or the provision of equivalent goods at the same price as those advertised.

Well guys who have shown interest, that is where you should be reporting. Luckily or unluckily I didn't get or look at the catalog, so I can't claim to have been mislead. Get too it. phone -ACCC Information Centre on 1300 302 502

The best policy is to ignore such "sales" altogether, and ignore Repco as an accessories store completely.
I really believe that selling a $99 item for $299, and then offering the last one in stock for $99 is insulting to the customer!

I do refer to the portable DVD player, which you can get from Strathfield for $99.
(OK! So it's not exactly the same... but the kids don't care!!)

Portable DVD Players

ps. a friend from work has one of those "Nextbase DVD Players". I've seen it! It works really well(for kids).
It plays DivX (mpeg4), and movies/shows recorded off your home entertainment DVD-recorder.

Stay away from Repco, unless you need car parts!!!

Arthurking83,

Have a close read of the details on that DVD player from strathfield and you'll see that it does not include a screen.
