Anyone having problems with Black Rat Hi-lifts mine keeps breaking the pin that the slide bar pushes on to lift the main pin back out of the rack when it does this you cannot lower the vehicle most annoying i have had this happen 3 times now
Beaver Sales the agent dont seem at all interested said they dont have a problem must be the way i use it
On a 4wd the other week we had 3 hi-lifts nobody else could see the problem but could not get it ot work either
Also hear Supercheap have recalled the ones they sold for the same reason
Any ideas
Cheers Kev

Kev
I am seriously disappointed to hear this. I have seen cheaper brands with problems with the mechanism. So I just bought a black rat hi lift recently thinking it was a quality brand. I have only used it in the driveway so far - not in anger.

Please keep us informed.

Hi jdpatrol
Yours may be ok i believe the one i have which is 12 mts old has a slightly different slide bar to the current batch
The slide bar on mine (the bit that moves up and down to release the lift pins) has a 10 mm flat on the top one about 16 mm on the bottom one the current batch are a bit longer and seem to work fine.I just happened to get one from a dud batch
Check yours and let me know what length the flats on yours are

Thats why I only buy the name brand stuff. The original Hilift brand hasn't let me down once, well it has but its supposed to isn't it, thats it's job afterall.

Hi Brad
I thought i was buying a name brand when i bought Black Rat going by the way they advertise and they are backed by Beaver who are the premium chain and lifting gear supplier( at least in Qld) supposedly fully tested and aproved
All other black rat gear i have is good and works perfectly
My biggest beef with them is their service or lack of

wouldn't touch Black Rat stuff with a barge pole, I've had a handwinch, snatch block and strap fail at various times, I don't abuse or overload my gear either.
Have heard that bods that go in comps won't touch BR gear either.
My 30 y/o hilift still works fine though.

The BR handwinch which failed brand new out of the box wouldn't hold a 60 series on about a 10 degree slope, we were demonstrating the use of a handwinch at the time so it wasn't being used in anger. The jaws were incapable of holding the cable.
The snatch blcok failed when the circlip slid of the central shaft and it literally fell apart, snatch strap failure was at the stitching.
As far as the failure of the hilift above the pins should never bend or break, they should not be the weak link as when they go so does the load.
I've used my 30 y/o Hilift to lift fully laden cruisers at the rear completely off the ground, even if the vehicle was overladen it is hard to see more than 1/2 the vehicle weight (prob around 2-2 1/2 tonne max) being applied to the jack. Well within the genuine Hilift capability.
Having used a Hilift to winch as well as lift the weak link is the operator, very hard to operate that handle when it is loaded.
I'd be taking it back and demanding a refund, threaten to contact cons affairs, workcover etc. A lot of those cheaper 'hilifts' have been recalled with and without the pretty paint job.

Hi Traveller2
I agree about overloading it is rated at 3250 kg and i'm lifting one corner of a 1900 kg car
when i suggested he take it back he said cant do that and just thought it was a joke so its time to get nasty I just needed to know i was'nt the only one
Thanks Kev

Hi Kev

I have a black Rat jack and have had it do exactly the same thing. After a call to supplier I was told that the two little pins are made to break as a shear pin type arrangement if u are overloading the jack....Not sure if it was true or not but I do put some pretty high loads on mine so maybe thats the cause. Iw as also told that Black Rat were supposed to be really good. One of the pins bent relly badly on mine so I pulled it out and straightened it (very soft too it was) the eventually it broke swo I bought new ones @$5 each, perhaps they just need a piece of HT putting in there instead

Dont think it was overloaded i was only lifting a pathfinder i believe its more of a design fault, I was sure mines not the only one that gives trouble, just needed to confirm that
My biggest beef is the lack of interest or service from the supplier
Thanks Kev
