The choice of a replacement full size 4x4 for my crashed 100 series saga continues. I took a brand spanking new HZJ105 Belmont Landcruiser for a 1,300km round trip to the north eastern wheatbelt yesterday for a bit of a trial run. Went surprisingly
well (it was empty though and I will be carrying a lot of heavy tools ) but the best fuel consumption figure I got was 14.1 1/100km's and the worst was 14.8. Nothing to write home about for 96kW I thought. I keep hearing stories about the 100 series drivetrain catasrophically failing in many different areas as
well. They do drive
well though and are nice and simple.
At the advice of many knowledgable members here, I'm now going to have a look at the GU factory 4.2TD. It does seem to combine the attributes of a rock solid drivetrain with an old school, simple mechanical diesel powerplant.
OK, what problems do they have?
What sort of fuel economy should I realistically expect? (I don't regularly tow anything)
What should I look for on a good one?
Thanks in advance.

Howdy v8,fuel cons sounds high for N/A diesel, my 80 L/C is consistantly in the hi 12s low 13s per 100,even with aload it doesnt get much worse.
I do have gennie headers and bigger exhaust though. also a bit more lively thru the rev range(engine has over 360000 ks and still pulls like a train and doesnt use oil or blow smoke).
cheers Tony.

My GU 4.2TD has now done 220000kms, averaging 12.6L per 100kms, best was 10L/100kms worse ever 17L/100kms.
Not a single problem in all these years other than maintenance (regular servicing) and injectors done once.
It goes just as good today as it did the first day and it has done many outback, high country type trips.
Good luck
Will

Mine has 276000k on it and i have just had all the
suspension bushes replaced front and rear as
well as the front brake pads. Drives like a new truck now, i didn't realise how bad it had gotten. The performance of the motor is still great for a naturally aspirated beastie.
The injectors were done at around 190,000ks. I don't hesitate to take it outback as I trust it to get me thru. I have had it since 129,000k's with the same clutch and rear brake pads.
LOVE MY GU U BETCHA!!!!!

V8 Diesel,
I agree with Will and Wayne about the vehicle just getting the job done all the time. (sometimes a bit warm when worked but still gets it done.)
My fuel figures are nothing like Will's though, I'm more like 16lt/100km but maybe that's my driving style or loaded up all the time. Towing it's more like 20 -21lt/100km.
I had a 100s wagon N/A before my GU and they both have strong points in different areas, cruiser comfy but weaker in g/box (in
mine anyway). GU good ergonomics for me and it hasn't let me down yet but it has run hot several times when I work it. 230000km and still original fr brakes, rears replaced at 210000, not bad I think. Apart from that I have only spent money on turbo, intercooler, exhaust, springs ect ect. But I wouldn't have done this if I didn't enjoy the car so much, and didn't think the car was going to last.
In fairness I have been led to believe GU's around
mine's vintage (2000) also have weak gearbox so keep an eye on this if your going back that far.
Cheers, Trevor.

V8 Diesel,
What you say about the drive train in the Patrol is true, very robust and reliable, from my 4.2TD GQ I was getting 11 /12 litres per 100, towing or doing anything really, usually managed 10.5 on a long run but that was the best I ever managed. I know you're talking about a GU and I'm talking about a GQ but the basic drive train is similar. I now have the 3.0 GU, from an electrics point of view and general body work the GU is good, the rear bumpers and arches take some hammer and they're not cheap to replace, if you are talking brand new I'm not sure of the cost of spares. I've fitted a dual wheel carrier so that gets me away from the cost of the bumpers and new lights.
Plenty of add ons obviously, I've just had a work mate who has done a trip around the top end in his 100 series, he didn't have may problems only what you may expect, broken windscreen and rear screen (could happen to any make), he did complain about a lot of things coming loose this was fixed up by the Toyota agent for free in
Broome ( I suspect maybe this shouldn't happen). He had no complaints about the drive train, did struggle with the Is For Shopping
suspension when off road, his rear locker helped (Toyota LSD isn't as good the Nissan one).
I can't comment from my own experience with a Landcruiser I've only ever had an FJ 40 which was as bomb proof as they come, I test drove a N/A 4.2 and wasn't that keen.
My comments and opinions as usual.
