I am looking at a 2nd hand 2001 auto GXL turbo diesel Landcruiser . It has done about 110,000 kms. Looks like it has had a pretty easy life with no obvious signs of offroading. Is there anything in particular I should look out for or any known problems with this model ? It has the 4 speed auto gearbox. I want it mainly for towing a caravan around NW WA & NT.
Any advice would be appreciated.

only problem with the pre 5 speed auto , is that they are slugs. As Long as the power issue dosnt bother you or the ifs , you will have a good run with it .

How does 154kW equate to being a slug? Mine goes like the wind. This motor is a work of art with fuel economy that wont break the bank. This is a fantastic vehicle that is very capable.

What we cant post OUR thoughts because we might offens someone , your obviously happy with your vehicle , why not post to this chap and explain that you have the same car and that your happy .

Instead you saw the need to defend your self .

Have a very good inspection of the right front control arm where the torsion bar is connected. Around the bracket area an inspection for cracks is essential.
Other than that, they are pretty good.

I think they''re a great vehicle.
I bought one for myself that someone had fully decked out.
It has the D-Tronic EMS in it - well worth the money in my opinion.
I recently took it to ARB to have some strengthening brackets bolted onto the bottom of the IFS suspension components, to mitigate any potential for the infamous front end failures you may have heard about, or seen photos of in some 4WD magazines. It only costs about $50, and until Toyota acknowledge that it's their design problem, then it's all at your cost. Besides - what's $50 when you've got so much money tied up in it ??
The only addition that mine needs is a set of roller-drawers (and maybe a roof rack)- it has everything else.
Oh - and a winch, but I don't serious go offroad (and I'm sure that 99% of LC100's don't use their winches much, if at all if they were honest)
I use mine to to my boat, and the dirtbikes in a trailer.
Last year hired a camper trailer, and towed it from Perth to Cape Leveque - got around 15-16l/100km towing at 120km/h on the open road. Very nice car to drive - they just want to eat up the kms. I just want to drive it everywhere.
My mate has a 2005 GXL T/D, and says that mine tows much better than his (one more tick for the D-Tronic); but I will say that the 5-speeds are smoother transmissions.
Mine is still smooth, but when it kicks down, sometimes it can be more noticeable.

Just watch out for the potential servicing charges you may be facing if it's done some mileage, and make sure that it has the correct tow-pack for towing the weight you intend to tow.

Apart from that - join the club!!
Cheers,
Davo

ChrisO,
D-Tronic EMS (Engine Management System) is basically a bolt-on computer which allows the technician to retune your engine for better power and torque.

See attached link: D-Tronic

I think they cost about $1000 + fitting.
I know that My Landcruiser goes harder, and is MUCH better for overtaking road trains, etc than my V6 Triton Ute was.
I never thought I'd be so happy driving a T/D Wagon.
It simply does everything I want it to.
IF they made a Dual Cab version, I'd buy one, but I'm not going to do one of those creative conversions; I may just buy a D/C ute as the second family car....maybe a X8 ??!!!

Hope this helps,
Dave
