Hi, I've found a GU DX with low k's (120,000km's) and a professionally fitted aftermarket turbo on it. Now I know the Toyota 1HZJ's have had a few issues holeing pistons etc but does anyone here know how the Nissan N/A 4.2 diesels stand up to the hairdryer treatment in the long run?
The turbo is a watercooled Mitsubishi unit that has been fitted by a reputable, specialist turbocharger company.
Anything I should look for or be aware of when I check it out?
Cheers

V8 Diesel.
If you haven't seen post 26335, it may put some doubts in peoples mind.
EGT's and Fueling appear to be a must "check" no matter who fitted the turbo.

My understanding is that the Nissan 4.2 diesels were built to take turbos but were never brought into Aust in turbo form until 1999/2000. The engine number prefix is TD........... In the MQ's which came in standard and turbo form, the engine prefixes were SD.... and TD..... respectively. My 1992 GQ has had a schwitzer turbo on since new and has not missed a beat. (196,000 kms)

Greg

I was under the impression that the pre TD4.2 engines had a beefier bottom end and hence were stronger than the current crop of 4.2TD's and better for aftermarket turbo kits as a result. Can anyone shed some light on this theory?

the main change in the TD42 was in mid 93, they went to lighter pistons and few other bits..The earlier were 'better' apparently. When the GU came about they changed again, sort of went back...
in the GU, the Non Turbo 4.2s were fine, theres a dozen + in our club with turbos tourin aus, and then theres the new ones that come with snails..

If you dont take it, I will... Thats what Im lookin for, then throw the Auto behind it.
Take it for a good run, few hills etc, see how it goes. If your happy, then go for it.
