Heya,

Just picked up an 89 Express 4WD pop top van, pet/LPG. The 2.4ECi motor is stuffed. Does anyone have much experience with these vans. Is it more cost effective to rebuild my motor or can u get Jap import replacements.

Also are there any other regular probs that I should take a look at. The van seems to be an ex hire vehicle. It is well set up and the rest of the van seems to be in great condition, although I noticed the rear tail shaft has a few dings on it.

Also I have found a 2.0 4WD model in a wreckers in Melb if anyone is chasing parts. Cheers

a number of years ago a bloke who was running (owned??) a pub in Hobart had one with a 427 chevy in the middle of the back (make sense?). Anyway this thing smoked those rear rubbers up and did the 1/4 in 10s..........sounded unreal especially when out for after midnight runs around the streets.............no help to you at all is it? Many years ago there was a place in Perth that was putting the 2.6 and also 2.0 toyota motors in them...............though I haven't heard about any such for a long time. Generally they are ok but if the tailshaft has a few ethnics then have a closer look and maybe find some other stuff...........not ex britz or maui is it?????

Well, yes that 427 sounds fun, wheel standing and all, but not really feasable for touring : ). I think I will stay with the 2.4, I can't see much advantage in the older 2.6. Unless someone knows something that I don't. I will grab the tailshaft off a 2.0 to keep as a spare until mine runs and I can test run.

I am not sure what hire company it was but it has a sunliner poptop, LPG, B/bar and rear bar both setup to carry spare wheel and extra fuel/water, wired for am/uhf radios, prof wired for 240v, bed and storage etc, tinted windows.

Does anyone know if these vehicles have LSDs?

Hi Nodoir
I had an earlier L300 with the 2.0 L engine and it went like the clappers. We had the 2.4 in some of our surveyors vans and they went even better. I know of 2 people who put 2.6 Sigma engines in and had heaps of dramas (overheating etc)so if you really like the car and intend keeping it, get the original donk reco-d. My L300 was not the most capable 4wd I've owned but it was certainly the most versatile I've ever had.

Nodoir.
The magnas used the same motor untill recently, the water pump and some other bits have to be transfered from the L300, the triton 2wd also was available with the 2.4. you are right in keaping it standard it always works out cheaper in the end. Eric.
