If any one could help i would be grateful, the tacho on my 2H diesel was erratic and then stopped indicating completely, does anyone know where the engine speed signal is sourced from ? Must be a sender there somewhere. Thanks

Hi
Gregory,
AFAIK, most automotive diesels take the engine speed signal from the alternator. I know for certain that my Land Rover does - it's just a small wire and 6mm spade connector on the back of the alt. So, it's probably worth checking all the connections on the alternator. I'm sure some Toyota gurus (gurii?) on here will confirm this or otherwise.

Not the 2H engine, it takes the tacho signal from a sender at the flywheel - this senses the ring gear teeth whizzing past.
This sensor, its on the passenger side of the bell housing, has a connector,
mine got erratic after driving through salt
water just once. Pulling the connector apart ( there is a little 'catch' that must be depressed if I remember rightly) and cleanig it fixed the erratic tacho problems.

Concur with Klaus, the sensor is in the Bellhousing and gets a lot of gunk on the connectors. Pull them apart and clean.

Thanks to all who answered, the
water thing sounds right on as it happened after going down the
Birdsville track in july after all the rain, lots of creeks and one huge bogging exercise. Will check it out thanks again

If it's not the connector for the sender, it'll be dry joints on the tacho pcb - a common fault on this model. Diagnosis can be done by giving it a thump on top of the dash pad above the instrument cluster, sometimes that makes it work again. (For a while) Easy to fix, check carefully where the brass pillars are soldered on.
Cheers
