The faithful Rangie is about to be sent on her way, possibly to a new owner who will get as much enjoyment from her as we have. In her place (whisper so she can't hear) is a 2001 Nissan Patrol GUII with the Z30 3 Litre Intercooled TD (fingers crossed). Goodbye green goddess, you will be missed

Fingers crossed indeed!! Didn't consider 'keeping the faith' with a Disco II Td5?

And in case readers think I'm hopelessly one-eyed towards Landies, I remember the same feelings of loss when our beloved '92 Toyota Cressida went to her new home - surely the most under-rated car ever to grace the roads of OZ - better 400m time then an EB Fairmont and as for build quality comparisons...). And Toyota's last 'real car' sold here (read: straight-six and rear wheel drive.)

My first and favorite car was Toyota's first in Oz, an RT40 Corona which I eventually turned into a rally car...it didn't do too badly either.

Was the RT40 even earlier than the Toyota Tiara? A mate in Townsville had one of these (looked a bit like a Toyota clone of a Ford Anglia, circa early '60s?, (watch a few epsiodes of "Heartbeat", young 'uns)). Still has it, AFAIK.

By the way, the DIII does nothing for me either. Too heavy, too complex and has an "accountants engine", i.e. a V6 (albeit diesel). But I think a late (2004?) DII Td5 might be a suitable replacement for 'Daphne', our long-suffering (read: often towing over 2 tonnes), 'been around' Disco 1 300tdi - when that sad day arrives...

Oh you know, you caught me out. I think the Tiara was first but there were not too many imported, if I remeber correctly.

I din;t consider a Disco II, as I felt it had some shortcomings compared to the Patrol, though I did really really really want a Disco III. I just couldn;t stretch the budget to even 62K for the base model TDV6.

I know that the Z30 can have problems but I know of many that haven't. This Patrol has 40K on the clock and has the 8.3L sump mod, so hopefully we will be safe or at least get some good life out of it yet.

If it's had the sump mod then it's definitely an early 3.0l. I have a late model GU 3.0 and think it's fantastic! I think you are pretty gutsy going for an early GU because not even I would buy one!

Leroy,

I may have given the wrong impression there. Let me correct that statement

It has an 8.3 litre oil capacity. Not sure if it is a mod or original but it has 8.3 L.
