Hi all havn't posted or commented for a while, hope everyone is
well. Anyways my GU IV 2005 4.2 T/D mod seems to be a bit clunky in the drive train, from take off in first gear and changing into second and sometimes third gear, im running slightly bigger tyres a 33" could this be it or just bad driving habbits on my part?
If anyone owns a GU IV 4.2 T/D or knows these vehicles, some feedback would be greatly appreciated..
Anyone else your normal humerous comments are always appreciated LOl lol........
Regards,
Babs.

Get someone to get underneath with the vehicle in gear and not running, try to turn the tailshaft and see if anything like uni's etc are not misbehaving otherwise it's the gearbox with some slack.
Maybe get a mechanic to have a look for you and advise.

G'day Babs,
Not sure whether this is your first big Nissan mate, but all the ones I've had have had a clunky feel to the box. They are, after all, out of a truck. To me it's kinda reassuring changing gears in the GU.....it's something that should not (cannot) be rushed. I tend to move the gear lever slowly and deliberately, pausing in the middle
gate before moving onto the next cog.
Don't suppose this answers your question, but it might give you something to think about (;-))

Have a look underneath your vehicle and note the physical size of the gearbox. Compare this to a landcruiser, prado etc and you will see the gearbox in your patrol is substantially larger. My Gu has a gearchange that is slower and clunkier than a troopy, to use a example of another 4wd I regularly drive, largely due to the size and mass differences in the components involved. Once you get used to the patrol and as roachie says slow down your changes or double clutch then you don't really notice it anymore. This is what I have found, as I was also struck by the clunky gearbox, having driven mainly cruisers in the past.
Cheers
