We're heading to
Coober Pedy in a week or so, from Maree /
William Creek. I assume trees are near non-existent in
Coober Pedy. Where am I best to stop for some firewood - for the
camp-oven dinner? (We've got permission to have a fire)

Hmmmm..... on the drive from Maree to WC, to CP, there will be many minor
creek crossings, with associated tree lines. If you stroll along those creeks a little way, you should get some fallen timber. My usual rule is that if you walk further than most people can be bothered, you'll find enough firewood. A $10 carpenters handsaw from Bunnings is all you need - they are damned sharp. If there are
camping spots on any of those tree lines, you'll have to walk further :-) ! Have a good one.

The
Oodnadatta track follows the old rail line and last time I was up there (albeit a year or 2 ago) there were still spots where you could pick up an old sleeper or 2 not far off the road.

Hi Gordo, We travelled the O/T just a month ago and there are still plenty of sleepers to be had. You should have no trouble in finding plenty of smaller bits for the
camp oven. Regards, Glenn

Take fire bricks or head beads don't take up much room and gives off plenty of heat. Unless you want a huge blaze.

The old redgum sleepers are great for
camp ovens.

Haven't been to that part of the country before... but are these old sleepers discarded alongside an active railway, or old sleepers from a disused line that are slowly being used up?

Old sleepers from the original Ghan line, last used in the early 1980's. They actually are not that potent for heat, but sure as hell beat no fire at all.
