Hi all,
I am soon to upgrade from camper trailer to pop top van and am keen to ascertain tow ball and packed caravan weights before I depart with the new unit.
Can anyone advise appropriate action to gain these respective weights and can you enlighten me regarding approximate costs a weighbridge operator might charge?
Is private operator the way to go or can I use a public weighbridge?
I am located in Ballarat Victoria area and would welcome any comment on a friendly private operator in the area.
Need the info so the missus won't take more than 3 hairdryers!!
Thanks in advance.........and please don't say to leave the bride at home.

Hi Peter

I don't know how to work out tow ball weight, but I had to get the dualcab weighed and I went to a weighbridge in Bendigo it was at Barastoc, I just drove up, went into the office paid my money [$12] I think, and the woman gave me a ticket with the weight on it, and that was it couldn't be easier.

Not sure if there's one in Ballarat, but bound to be I'd reckon.

Peter,
I just put wound the jockey wheel on to a set of b/room scales [ on concrete] unhitched it & that gave me my towball weight , close enough anyway,& DONT let the missus see. But when u take it to the weighbridge they can give u the weight anyway, just do the truck, hitch the van & put the truck [only] backon the scales, mine was only a few kgs. diff. than the bathroom jobby, remember the towball weight has got be no more than 10percent of the total van weight [I think] .Hope this helps...

Peter I am just north of Bendigo and have a weighbridge for our business and we do many weighs for freinds with vans ect. We normally put the car only on the bridge with the van on and loaded. say it weighs 2300 kgs. we then unhook the van and jack it up clear of the ball pull and make sure the jack is off the bridge and on the approach. the weight will say be 2150 kgs that will indicate that you have a down weight on the vehicle of 150 Kgs. you can do these weigh in various ways to see what each axle is weighing. feel free to use our w/bridge. we do not charge for these weighs for like minded people. Give me a hoy if you want to drive up to Huntly. Web have a fertiliser business.

Thanks for the info and kind offer lindsay.
I will certainly keep you in mind if I have problems locally and I am pretty sure we pass through Huntly when we sometimes head off to Echuca. Nice drive to Bendigo in any event.
New unit is yet to be built but we expect collection late October.
Your details have been noted from the Web (LCF) and I will make contact if needed.
Once again thankyou mate and what a great site to get info and help from.
Cheers.

All i do is drive onto weighbridge and clear wheels of tow vehicle off bridge and onto apron, check weight then wind down jockey wheel to clear van off vehicle, the differance between to weights is ball weight. Needs to be about 10% of total weight.
Cheers
