Landcruiser 100 4.5L Petrol Manual
I have what seems to be a strange performance problem with my Cruiser. When I take off everything seems to be working OK but there is a noticeable sudden improvement at about 1,500-2,000 revs. This feels a bit like a turbo kicking in.
Has anybody else experienced this problem (perhaps even in a 4.5L 80 series) and does anybody know what it might be?

Trade it in and up grade to a GU Patrol.!!!!! heheh
Your motor is congested. It gutless in its initial rev range.
Get yourself a snorkle to get more and clean air inside - Get extractors (preferably PACEMAKERS) and a good 2 1/2" exhaust system as straight as possible(single muffler and single resonator if you want to keep it quiet). Don't go to a 3" as you'll lose BACKPRESSURE and you power and torque will move up in the rev range.
Are you in
Brisbane
Once this is done, wwooohhhoooooo.
Revs like a F1 and drives like a new truck.
It's only a yota. I personally would trade it for a GU.

Has it only just started doing thins??
Below 1500 is it gutless and then once above 2500rpm is it gutless again if so you may have a problem, possibly fuel delivery.
Gear selection??? To higher gear for speed travelling??
Otherwise
It sound’s normal to me, the motor is just entering it’s power band I.E you max toque will be at around 3000rpm and max Kw around 5000rpm, as the rev’s pick up it is normal to feel the engine pushing out more power and thus the car gaining speed.

I have the same on my 4.5 manual. I only noticed it after fitting larger diameter rubber though.
lcool flat spot info
Extractors will help, I only noticed a difference with the
snorkel at highway speeds though.
You can disconnect your battery for a while to reset the ECU then let it map again as per the manual, or preferrably get it dyno tuned.

BenSpoon - Thanks for the reply.
It is funny that you mention larger tyres as recently I have been running 285/75/16 which are 33" as compared to the original 31".
I have also been running a bit conservatively lately due to the price of fuel, so I am probably noticing it more.
It does seem like a machenical or electrical problem as it is not gradual it is an immediate kick in.

Theres your problem then- Its exactly the same on
mine and I have the same size
wheels as you have now.
You can get new diff ratios or replacement gear box cogs to fix it, but both options run over $1k with the parts and installation taken into consideration.
I've found while it doesnt accellerate too
well at lower revs, she still has a fair amount of torque that low, and I have often seen the tacho needle bounce off 200rpm as I crest steep hills I expected to stall on. The highway preformance does suffer, but on the blacktop I generally keep it above that range anyway so its only noticeable when taking off from lights.

Thanks everybody!
The cruiser is going in for a service next week, so this will give me a few things to discuss with them.
