Hi all a really dumb question regarding the auto lock hubs on the GU IV...
What is the bl___dy difference.
Does it sometimes slip out?
Can I use my diff locks (air lockers)?
How hard are they to disconnect?
So far I have not been game to use the auto mode and have been getting out and selecting manual lock...
I asked my ARB dealer mmm great help (not)... So ill leave it to the experts you guys, Thanks..

Babs.

It means when you move the short lever to 4H, the hubs will automatically engage allowing it to accept drive from the front diff and axles.

On a manual hub, you can engage 4H but unless the hubs are engaged you have NO 4WD!!!

The Hubs can unlock in extreme conditions so the GU has the option for you to manually lock them. e.g. my old Pajero auto hubs are screw types that wind on. If i drove nose first DOWN into a hill or something, I get stuck and need to reverse. In rare cases, as i reverse i can unscrew the hub and lose 4wd.

BUT you're driving a GU (bullet proof).
If this question is an indicator, I can't see you getting yourself into extreme enough situations to engage the manual lock.

You're really neck deep in sh*t if you need that and by that stage you'll be winching.

Just drive the bloody thing.
Diff locks you use as normal.

auto locking hubs are good if you get caught off guard,,, ie: come round a corner and you end up ankle deep in mud,,, you dont have to get out and lock them in etc etc... but whenever you are going to 4x4'ing just treat em like your old style,, lock em in manually and use yourdiff locks to boot...
the auto hubs wear out if you use them all the time so lock em in.. treat em like normal gq style and you will be fine...

Babs,
As mentioned above, if the gear stick inside the car is in 2WD H or L with the hubs in Auto the prop shaft won't be turnin. If the stick remains in 2WD H or L and the hubs are locked the prop-shaft will be turnin. The lock mode locks the diff up, to a point. If you have the gear stick in 4WD H or L and the hubs in auto or lock you have the same status of drive.
The difference is if you are doing a lot of accelerating and decelerating with the hubs in auto there is a certain amount of free float between shaft load going forwards and backwards, this can be quite frightening if you are doing a tricky manoeuvre, they hubs engage and disengage with quite a bang depending on load of course.
If I'm doing any sort of off road stuff and I know I'm going to be doing some tricky stuff I always engage lock. For gravel roads it's convenient to leave the hubs in auto and use them like that, I don't have to get out then when changing between bitumen and gravel, personal choice. Sand I always use the hubs in lock.
If you are driving the front diff and turning the prop shaft and some extra gearbox bits you will also be using more fuel, how much is questionable and I suspect difficult to quantify.
I hope some of this is of use to you and not to confusing. I think I'm right.
Keep the shiny side up

I have had my GU for 3 years and done plenty off road stuff...beach work, Fraser Island, Gravel and rocks.

Only ever used the auto mode from inside the cab, never had a drama, never lost traction and never got bogged. (OK I lied about never getting bogged) but it wasn't the fault of the hubs!

I have never even tried to manually lock the hubs.

Thanks all, I think I will be sticking to doing what I was, that is locking them manually for my off roading, nice to know though that if the occasion arises I don't have to get out and manually lock them....

Cheers all,

Babs...
