I’m looking at buying a ¾ length alloy roof rack and an alloy bulbar for a new 100 Series TD instead of the usual steel. Are there any brands/models that are more robust than others?

Rather than go for the full steel rear bar, I might go for a single wheel carrier only. What is the pick of the present bunch?

Also need a towbar that permits easy variation of hitch and height (tow different trailers.). What suggestions?

Lastly, the Cruiser suspension could do with help for the heavier loads of a heap of people and gear plus the trailer (when used). Would Polyairs plus bigger tyres (which, what size?) do the trick? For cost/benefit, is there a better option? The GXL has 17 inch Sahara rims but that doesn’t help clearance..

I am located in Brisbane and get off road but not extreme stuff.

thanks in advance

Hi Ray
I spoke with the Toyota dealer and he might supply the Toyota towbar at cost (rest of the vehicle is probably dear enough ;-)).

However I have yet to find out whether Toyota dealer 'cost price' is near the usual price of Hayman Reece.

Genuine toyota towbar does not allow for fuel tank upgrade.
They are made by trailboss who make ARB towbars.
Hayman reese and trailboss are owned by the same company.

That is a good point, I hadn't considered there would be any impact on later fuel mods.
thanks

The Hayman Reece towbar is fantastic as it has a 3500kg limit and has various hitches to fit and they will manufacture to your requirements.

The Sahara rims are ok Its the tyres you need ie BF Goodrich 33's or the less common 34's AT's or the Cooper ATT's are also awsome. Fantastic mileage and reasonably quite both of them. Can expect approx 80,000 kms min

I am an ARB fan, however TJM roof racks are just as well manufactured in my humble opinion.

Thanks, I've heard good reports on Hayman Reece.

I am led top believe that the roof racks need full length support to sutvive corrugations. Do you know if ARB or TJM alloy racks are made that way?

Do you have any experience with Polyairs? I searched the site and the results were inconclusive - some were concerned about failures.
cheers

What would it cost for a tjm xgs suspension installed? IWhat effect on stability on the road and in wet conditions? I probably wouldn't go that way but it is tempting.

It cost around $2000 and the stability has not been affected. The suspension is stiffer though, so it is not as plush as before, however it now corners flatter. In the wet with the coopers, i have been very impressed. When it does let go, it is very controlled and easy to know when to back off. Also i fitted tjm's step bar which is fantastic. High up to give clearance, and nicely tucked in. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Sorry about the extra questions, but does the up-grade also improve any alleged weaknesses in the IFS?
cheers

No, it doesn't. I have heard a lot of conflicting stories. I have come to the conclusion that as long as you don't go to extemes, you should be ok. Avoid snatch recovery in reverse seems to be the consensus.I am considering the arb option. Also this post might be handy clickhere

Hi ev700
I have just fitted an ECB alloy roof rack to my 120 prado.
Very strong but weird shape. Possibly governed by the roof shape.
It mounts up the same as the 100 series which is three legs that bolt to the roof mounting points.
I had a TJM rack on my 80 series and when I walked on it, it used to bend but the ECB one is nice and solid when walked on.
As for the tow bars, you can't go past Hayman Reece.
Go for the Firestone coil rites in the back. Adjustable according to load and you can get them from
HERE
at less than half the price of Australia. Usually about $140 with postage as apposed to $300 .
Best of luck

G'day,
That site is most useful. Did you install yourself or failing that what installation cost?
Thanks again
