Hi,
Thanks for the great info so far via this forum.
I'm planning a trip which will take a year or so exploring this part of our world but sorry W.A. will have to catch up another time. I will be a solo female with 2 children.

I have so many things I need to ask. I have pretty well no knowledge so you can imagine the unlimited questions I need to find answers to. It's pretty daunting but I will do this trip, so have to find the answers. If you have some patience could you
email me (attheoffice@optusnet.com.au) & suffer my basic questions.
Kindest regards, Michele

In hindsight, reading the post again I fear this is a wind-up.

Just post the queries on here, there are no stupid questions. More often than not you will ask something that other people would like to know the answer to as well.

The advantage of posting is you will often get varying solutions from some very seasoned travellers, instead of one solution spouted as gospil. I have learnt a ton on here, and I am still like a kid in the woods compared to most of the people on here, but we all have to start somewhere.

So I will happily suffer your basic questions, I know I will learn a few things from them too.

Cheers

Glenn

Hi Michelle - I have posted what may seem to some to be dumb and/or non-mechanical female questions, and have always got great feedback, which has helped us make up our mind about things we were in a quandary about, or saved us heaps by telling us where to get parts at a better price. Before i buy anything 4wdy I "consult the experts" - the forum members. The members have a huge collective of experience. Remember, if you want to know, there will be at least 10 or 20 others wanting to hear the answer to the same question. I look forward to your questions on Exploroz.

I agree with Gajm, this forum is excellent. You will get mostly unbiased advice from a wide range of people who have travelled "that road" many times over and their shared experience and will help you immensely

Michele A

First things first.

Join a club!

You'll learn how to drive, get great advice about where to go and when to go there.
Also how to best see the sights, camping tips, cooking tips.... the list goes on!

And any questions you have, post here, there is always someone on this forum who will know the answer!

You are fantastic! It wasn't a windup Gloworms. I really do need to know a lot of stuff. I'm glad too you don't bite Steve. The response was amazing. I'm really excited that I now have some knowlegable people to ask my million questions. Thanks everyone who responded, it doesn't feel as daunting now. Before, my avenue for advice was salespeople; didn't make me feel to confident about the endeavour.
I have a few months left to plan & get ready, so I'll do a mechanical course so I won't burden you unnecessarily. Joining a club? That's to teach 4Wdriving? Can I do that before I buy the car? I'm thinking they(4WD) will be cheaper in a couple of months when all the Mum's who use one just around town get sick of higher fuel prices.
Someone suggested to me gas conversion - any opinions on this? Would it be a third the fuel price?
Thanks again, I think it's absolutely great that you all were so willing to help. Michele.

You will need to purchase a vehicle before joining a club and doing a 4wd course (what will you use to do the course in otherwise!!) But I strongly recommend doing the above and also doing a few club trips to gain experience.
Depending where you go LPG may not be readily available but is reasonable cheap. Diesel may be a better option.

Going gas isn't the best option unless you are intending to stick to main roads and major centres. Auto gas outlets are not everywhere in the outback. The gas tank takes up valuable space which could be used to fit a larger petrol tank. I would suggest to look for a diesel 4x4 if you are intending to buy a 4x4.

Who knows where the price of fuel is going to go?

Fuel prices forecast? I work for a fellow who's job is to invest in mineral resources for a large company. His prediction was that fuel would go up 20 cents a litre and then stabalise. Fuel went down 10 cents a week later. Let's hope his crystal ball is cloudy. Michele
