Always carry a second spare or at least carry a casing without the rim if you are proficient in tyre changing. Although you may not be in really remote areas a second spare is peace of mind just in case you destroy a tyre.
Do an archive search as this subject has come up a number of times.

Yes; as long as you think I qualify as people!!!
I usually take second spare; not mounted on rim; just depends on how self sufficient you wish to be.

Hi there triton we actually take 2 up the roof basket you never know I have bfs all terrain on the vehicle but the other 2 are just a cheaper brand which only have about 20% tread but good enough to get us out of trouble if need be + if they get flogged I dont really care there only the standard steel rims I have sunraysia's on the actual 4wd. Depends on how much room you need. I don't put ant thing else up there as dont want it to top heavy. Take Care Steve M

Hi TDBTriton,
I have a second spare on a cheap steel rim plus another spare casing as
well and which one I take essentially comes down to how much room I have. If room is at a premium I take the casing and stuff it with all of the things you need to take "just in case" but probably won't need (tyre levers, mallet, spare tube, other spares etc). I wrap this all up and hopefully don't touch it for the whole trip. I have never yet had to open it all up but it's there if really needed. If it's a short trip where I am not short of space I take the full spare on the rim. Unless it is really in civilisation I would always take 1 or the other despite the fact that I have never actually had to use even my 1st spare (touch wood).
If you pick up another rim as a second spare make sure it fits properly under your guards etc and over the brake drums etc and do not just assume it will be ok if it has the right stud pattern because the offset etc can be an issue.
Enjoy the trip
Trevor

at least two spares....
I blew two tyres in the Kimberleys last year within an hour
...Yokahama Superdiggers...
beautifull looking tyres
nice raised white writing
I think good for "Toorak Tractas"
Are not steel wall tyres, blew the sidewalls apart on the corrugations on both tyres even though the preasures were those recomended by the tyre dealership in Kunnunurra for the local dirt road conditions.

Well, I'm convinced. The second spare will be no use sitting in the shed, so I might as
well put it on the roof.
Think what might happen if I left it at home: I'd be sitting by the side of the road with two flats, someone would drive up, look at the ute and the number plates, and say, "Hey, aren't you the bloke that asked the question about taking a second spare......?"

You can't win. If you do take it you won't get a single puncture and it will be a real pain to lug it all over the country. If you don't take it you will certainly get two punctures at the same time, be stranded and most like die a horrible death waiting to be rescued because you also skimped on comms.

I would myself, but then again I've done that trip with only one and didn't need it. Depends on the risk you want to take, and the kind of tyres you use. The route you're planning is like a highway by outback standards, plenty of traffic and available help.
I'd still take a second spare as I do most of the time, but you're hardly being reckless with only one on that "suburban loop". HNow if you were going north from
Innamincka, most definitely two...
