Hello - you can run DiscoverAus on Magellan FX 325. As these are now a discontinued model this advice could be considered purely academic...though they still pop up on ebay ..

eBay FX 325

No..its not mine

Hi Algee ,
I have the Magellan FX 324 MAP COLOUR and I think it is the best thing since sliced bread .
Being an old fart , my sight is going and the big screen makes it easy .The maps are "just OK" . Sometimes surprise me with their detail , and other times with their lack of it , but on the whole they are OK .
They have been discontinued and I cannot figure out why . One fellow with us on my last trip to WA in July / Aug ,was so impresses and rang shops all over NSW until he found one in stock and bought it last week.
I know some guys who compete in 4WD comps - they use this model and swear by it .
I decided against going the laptop / hard drive direction because , although the maps and software are much better , they are unwieldly and the hard drives bugger up on corrugations and the units are never sealed and get dust in them.
I reckon if you still want an FX324 you will find some dealer in Aust. who still has stock .
Cheers ,
Willie .

You can not use raster maps with FX - it only uses Magellan DiscoverAus or Magellan version of Great Desert Tracks - not sure about new DiscoverAus Topo. I am not sure if there are other chart plotters that use raster images. You could always get a PDA/Palm based GPS unit or run a laptop + GPS and use raster images (with OziExplorer GPS mapping program for example).

Cheers

Garmin GPS276C. Works well in both Marine and Auto modes. Auto routing on the road, screen big enough to actually see and both Blue Charts and land maps. Only restriction is that you can only use the Garmin maps without a lot of work.

Tim,

Are you aware that there are third party topographic maps available for Garmin units in Australia?

Have a look at Track4Australia. These maps are compatible with all MapSource applications and they're free.
