I currently own a 60 series factory turbo diesel that I uses to tow my caravan (about 2000kg loaded). I am considering trading up to something with a bit more comfort. I am looking at a 100 series standard diesel and wondering if it will tow my caravan ok ? Anyone else use a standard diesel for towing and could offer some feedback or advice ? I also considered a 2nd hand TD100 but don't like the IFS.

The standard 100 series will tow it no problems but it won't be a rocket ship.

I reckon a 100 would be a step back from a 12ht equiped 60

Do you think the 12ht would have more towing power than the 100 series diesel ?

You only need look at the power output of both engines to answer that I dont remember them but i think there is at least 20kw difference in power.

12ht only had 4Kw more power, but had a fair bit more torque (315Nm). An the 60series was about 300kg lighter.

Have you considered that the 60/61 series has a maximum towball weight of 115kg, thus anything heavier will void your insurance?

Someone in our club tows their twin axle offroad van (no idea on weight) with an 80 series 1HZ. It is slow but he always gets there.

Hey ChrisO,

What about a late model 80 series turbo diesel? Probably the best diesel turbo for towing still within most peoples affordable range, and to top it of, I think a lot of people that spend time off road would rather put their trust in an 80 than a 100.

Hi Pezza,
I have considered a turbo 80 series, but to find a good one is another thing. I have been looking for months for a late model 1995 - 1997 but they just don't seem to come up. If anyone knows of a good one I would love to hear from them. That is why I am considering the 100 series.

ChrisO,

Before my GU I had a 100 series n/a diesel, it pulled the van ok but as said by someone else it was no rocket ship. 20lt/100km the norm when towing. Biggest problem I had was with the gearbox (rebuilt twice in 18 months), maybe mine was a dud or I was asking too much from it I don't know. The GU does the job now but if Toyota had a stronger box they would still have my business, only I would have the turbo 100 to do the job instead of my old n/a 100.

Just my 2 cents worth.
Trevor.

ChrisO,

Van weighs 2 tonne but regularly loaded to 2 1/2, 3 tonne.
Fuel doesn't seem to vary much if van is 2 or 3 tonne is always 20lt/100km but I can get to where I;m going much quicker than when I had the 100 series. Just have to be careful on really hot Nth QLD days not to overheat the GU.

All a bit of a trade off Chris. I have a 100TD Auto and it tows my 2500kg boat & trailer from Brisvegus to NT and back including Cape Crawford Roper Bar no probs. TD HUGE advantage if considering overtaking. I am aware of the IFS frailties and drive accordingly in the rough but it is a gem for an old F like me and fuel economy blows yr socks off. 15l/100 with the boat which also has a very high cabin and tfore large wind resistance. Unladen went to Hervey bay and back 700k 63 litres. Mate tows a 3000kg Bushtracker with same rig and gets under 20l/100 with that
