New to the
forum and its great to finally find a site thats more dedicated to touring with all the helpful travel links.
I recently bought a 98 V6 Rodeo which is my 2nd 4rby in 18 mths so I'm reasonably new to 4 wheel driving too.
I'm going to set the Deo up for general touring and I'm after a couple of inches of lift.
A 4x4 parts supplier that I spoke to today suggested Firestone Airbags to assist the rear leaves considering
the springs are H/D and in good shape.
They're about 800 bucks I can fit them myself. 50mm Lifted Dakar Springs will be about 5-600 fitted but I like the idea of having adjustable airbags to suit the load/terrain etc.
Apparantly they are tougher than poly and last for yonks.
Has anyone had or have these airbags and what do you think of them?

I have Polyair coil bags which are good and somewhat cheaper. I am not aware of Polyairs having a durability problem.

I have just taken the Polyairs out of the Ute after 90000klms and they are fine and they came from another vehicle that had them in for years. Interesting that when I went for Firestone the seller would not warranty them on the Ute as he wasa sure we would overload it, Polyairs had no such problem

Mate,
I have Poilyairs and have had no problems - only cost approx $400 fitted - bit cheaper than $800.
Use the search engine at the top of the page, type in a keyword ie 'air bags' or 'polyairs' or firestone and this will bring up all the previous threads.
Ultimately not a lot of difference between then, same as the Holden / Ford, Patrol / Landcruiser, Uniden / GME debates. Everyone has their opinion. Best of luck with which ever one you choose.

Sudsy,
I have been running Polyairs in my GU Patrol for the last 5 yrs, no probs, cost a bit less than $400. Before that, ran a Maverick with them in for over 10yrs, no probs. Recommend them. Note that they do not provide lift; they just restore ride height. If fitting lift springs, you will need to purchase Polyairs to suit. I recall that in the Mav, which had 2" lift, a rubber spacer block was installed at the base of the Polyair spring. I've been told that this is kosher.
If installing polyairs, carefully consider where you want the Schrader valves installed; ideally in a place where they are accessable, but cannot be damaged. Similarly, consider how the air tubes are run so they cannot be damaged by flying rocks, etc. (when I had them installed in the Mav, the idiots mounted the schraeder valves right out proud on the rear bumbers, ready to be knocked off - had to move them myself)

Thanks for the responses.
I have given the polybags some consideration in the past but when this susp. supplier/fitter told me that the Firestone airbag
suspension will give custom adjustment and substantial lift I wanted to find out more.
Apparently they are the same type and work on the same principal as the air susp. on trucks and buses and in-cab controls is optional.
Everyones probably seen buses and coaches lower their susp. to let passengers on and off
well these are the same thing only for 4by's. Apparently some Landy's came out with them as options or something.
I found out there is a Rodeo like in for sale in a car yard that has these so I'll check them out in action for myself when I'm in
Adelaide next.

Rang up the Airbag Man in Qld. today and he said the bags will only restore the ride level back to the original height when loaded up.
The susp. supplier/fitter told me they would lift above standard height so a little porky pie told there.
So bugger it, I'm getting lifted springs.
If anyones had a good run with their lifted leaf springs I'd like to hear what brand they were or who reset them (preferably in SA)
Thanks
