I have heard and known a few people with Hilux gearbox problems, its usually on higher kms, and normally top gear goes first.
That said a friend has one, not sure of year, recent though, whole box rebuilt at 30000km, toyota said it was made with a faulty batch of bearings, went again at 40000km, toyota again repaired on warranty, claiming the first rebuild was done with parts from the same bad batch!
Was enough for me to buy Nissan, thats for sure.

I have owned 2 x Hilux's so far, the 1985 and 2000 Models, the 1985 did 160,000 towing a small camper all over the country, many many trips into the Victorian high country, over many gear box "shocking" tracks no problems ever !
The 2000 Hilux (180,000) has done the same but with a heavier Jayco Off road camper, I have had no gearbox problems in this either. (the camper doesn't see the high country though :-)
I do maintain the vehicle myself, change the gear box oil at least once a year or when we have encountered many deep
water crossing were
water has entered.
I treat the mechanical side of the vehicle with respect and have had no problems, if you have some mechanical knowledge of what happens when A connects to B through a clutch things last longer :-)
This was enough for "me" to order my 3rd Hilux, the new 2005 SR TD, pick it up October/November :-)
