Just a quick question, not at all used to gps systems and accosiated guidance systems but just searching e bay and was wondering if anyone had any comments or opinions about Mio 168 unit. Probably don't need one but was wondering what sort of coverage these type of units give, I.E. main roads only or bush tracks as
well.
Thanks Rob !MPG:3!

Hey Rob, not sure about the specifics on that particular movel, but I highly recommend you give Johnny appleseed GPS a call. They are in Brissy and havea great websight. If you explain to them what you are after they will give you excellent advice onwhat will best serve your needs.
For what it's worth, my 2 cents is that you need to buya GPS that can link with a computer. As yet none of them (as far as I know) have the ability to show topography (Garmin expect to have it by end of 2005 ) not sure what scale thogh. I asked JA GPS about a Unit that can be used on and off road, as
well as for mee I wanted tit to be hand held as
well. The GPs'are only as good as the software ytou loadinto them.. For the incar navigation systems.. most of them wil show you what road you are on and once you get off the orad.. all you get is dots onthe screen and a refernce point.. You then need to manually apply that inf to the old paper map.. If you plug your GPS into your laptop which has maps and Ozi exporer on it all the hard work is done. Your GPS will be as accurate as the map you have loaded... ie 1:10000000 or 1;1000.. it will show you exactly where you are.. the "incar" Naviagtors.. can't do that. I bought a Garmin GPS 60C.. Hand held,
water resitant, 2 AA or 12V adaptor, external aerial and Laptop connections. Color display and can also be used as an incar navigator as it can use Garmin Mapsource maps which you type the address you want in and it wil giver you turn by turn promts.. a grat little larounder for $700.. mind you.. other sotware and bts etc all up a total of about $1500 (not inlcuding laptop)

Rob,
I have a Mio 168 and find the bundled “CoPilot Live” software to be very good around town (
Melbourne). I haven’t used it on the highway much but I am sure that it would cover most major roads and towns. It can also display speed cameras.
I use it during the week to sync my work calendar and then on the weekend to help me out while 4WDing. Because it is a Pocket PC, I was also able to salary sacrifice it so I pay it off monthly and I get it for almost half price. Good value.

Somehow I forgot to mention that because it is a Pocket PC it also runs OziExplore CE. You can then load all of your digital maps and use the 168 on the tracks. I comes with a windscreen mount suction cap arm that hasn't fallen of on many very rough tracks.
I also have a Megellan 320 and a Laptop but I found this cumbersome and hard to manage on the rough tracks.
