Hi all,
Some thoughts, if you will...
I am looking to change insurers for my 80 Series due to the excessive premiums that I'm currently paying. In my search I found a particular insurer that covered my vehicle for off road use unless it is being used in a negligent manner (of course) or in a competition arena.
Whilst I'm not looking for a way to rort the system, I do want to know that my rig is covered for what I want to use it for. My question is this: If I am driving in a 4WD
park (cruiserpark QLD in particular) and have a head on (for arguements sake) around a blind corner, am I covered?
The reason I ask is that I visit the
park on the busiest weekend of the year (Mud Bulls) and whilst I don't compete I would be classified as being in a competition arena. The lovely lady in the call centre said that I was covered for driving anywhere so long as it's legal and thier policy doesn't differentiate between on and off road but that they would also classify the property as being a competition arena and therefore I wouldn't be covered? I'm confused!
Clearly the best solution would be not to have an acco but if anyone's got any thoughts or experiences they wanna share, let er rip, cause after all, what else are we gonna do on a Monday? Work? Ha! ;-)
Cheers
Scoey.

why are you confused, they said they wouldnt cover you... if they say that you can be bleep in assured they wont pay up if need be...
Look elsewhere for insurance. You will pay more for 'proper' offroad insurance..

Yeah I realise an insurance co won't pay a cent if they can avoid it. I was more intruiged by the fact that you can use a vehicle one weekend and be covered and then use the same vehicle in the same location the following week and in exactly the same manner as the week previous , regardless of your involvement (or lack thereof) of any competitions, you're not covered.
I was merely trying to see if anyone had had any encounters with this clause.

Its a common thing- All policies I have seen only mention exclusions for things like pacemaking,
hill climb, time trial and comp events. As she said, if you are offroad legally you are fine. Do not trust the phone operators 100% as they give their own interpretation of the policy book- just like her interpretation of an offroad
park as a competition arena. Read the book yourself- its the only safe way.
I have found where policies do actually differ is in their cover of accessories (fitted things like spotties, radios, stereo- you need them listed) and cover for removable contents of your car (your fridge, swags, GPS, etc).
Theres also the bleep clause: If you are aware of a blatant risk of damage and do it anyway, you may not be covered. If you find an insurance company that does not have this clause, do one of two things: stay away or you will soon be insured by a bankrupt company, or alternatively tell me so I can drive my car over a campfire, watch it burn and get paid out big time.

We have a policies via a broker in
Melbourne,(DGA I think) for our Freelander and Troopy. The policy is with CGU and the exact wording is the vehicle is covered "Anywhere" in Australia. It also includes accessories and modifications but does have the usual competition related exclusions.
We let the Freelander insurance lapse while it was in storage and when we renewed noticed it a couple of months ago, there is an import vehicle clause, ticked that as the Freelander is from NZ and it is still insured for the same premium quoted when they did not know it was an import.
We are not too worried about the premium, just wanted the vehicle insured as it is an import. Our Troopy which is a similar age but worth more costs around the same amount to keep insured with the same company with the same conditions.
I especially like the clause "anywhere" in Australia.

Scoey,
I own an 80 series petrol 94 with plenty of toys and have it insured with RACQ. I phoned them and asked the offroad question. I was told 4wd
park ok as long as you are on a "Marked" trail, I.E Hilux highway or similar (Example Landcruiser
Park.)
