Waeco Thermostat or timer?

I have a 80l waeco with the lights to indicate the settings. Does anybody know whether each light is supposed to indicate a temperature decrease or a run time increment.

Some days it will freeze on setting four (of 8) but on hotter days setting four just keeps the beer cold. I had assumed it was thermostically controlled but maybe not.

Jim

Hi Jim,

it's supposed to be thermostatically controlled, on there website it gives an indicative list of # of lights/internal temperature. I have the 110L and I find it varies quite a bit depending on the ambient temp. On Sunday we had a sausage sizzle and used my fridge to keep the sausages and burgers nice and cool. On 3 lights it sat on 2.9c all day(waeco dual temp thermometer) while sitting in the open, exposed to direct sunlight for part of the day. I find if the ambient climbs above 30c, it takes 4 or 5 lights to maintain <4c.

When I run it on 240v via the adapter, which actually delivers 24v to the unit, it will pull down to -3c on 3 lights while sitting in my spare room. It's all a bit hit & miss, the dual temp thermometer has taken most of the guess work out of it though.

Hey Blue.......
Given that it seems to work more efficiently on 240v (ie: 24v DC) what would the chance be of hooking it up through an inverter? Would that be any good? Probably use just as much juice, cos you've gotta run the inverter in the 1st place....but then again, if the compressor is more efficient on 24vdc....who knows???
Just a thought

You're an ideas man, aren't you Roachie...??? Perhaps someone here who knows what they're talking about can do the math to see if it's viable.

Your experience would be the same as mine then. I can't see how it is thermostatically controlled if you have to turn it up on hot days.
If you set it to 3 degrees then it should simply maintain 3 degrees or run continuously trying too.

Call to Waeco and some testing coming up.

These fridges vary according to ambient temp, load volume of contents, how often they are opened etc.

I've owned an Engel and a Waeco. They both vary. The best thing to do is buy a thermometer (two zone one from K Mart, or brand name from a camping store) and monitor the temp inside the fridge. Keep in mind the temp will vary in different spots inside a CF80 as the cooling element is only at one end. This is great IMO as I have the beer at -2 at one end and the food at +4 at the other, with varying degrees in between.

Then simply adjust the lights as needed.

What model Engel did you have? Mine only varies 2c from 10c to over 40c
I just set it and forget it, has a built in therometer.
