Got the Pathy serviced today and they replaced an alternator belt -as
well as doing all those "value add" things like paint my battery posts and add wiper bottle conditioner....yeah...you can smile and call me "Sir" all day - I still reckon your ripping me off.
Anyway, everytime I start the Pathy now there is a squeal on start up. Suspecting the new belt as the culprit I asked the service manager about it - and was told that "all new belts do this until worn in". I reckon that is bull excrement. More likely they didn't tension it right.
Does anybody know whether it is actually true that new belts need 'wearing in"???

New belts do stretch slighly, get them to retension it.

Mate you would correct in your statement? the belts are NOT tensioned properly,After 25years in the business never had this happen to me or my staff. New belts dont wear in they wear OUT.Go back and have it rectified,

Wearing in, meaning the belt has stretched (All new belts stretch) and need’s to be re-adjusted.
I am assuming it is not a serpentine drive belt.

ok, thanks guys. I could understand if it stretched over a week or so - but it squealed when I started it at Nissan. I'll go back and get them to tension it properly.
Sorry, don't know what a Serpentine belt is - this belt has a broad flat top and a 'V' section underneath.

serpentine belt, one flat belt that wraps around every pulley in the engine bay.

Hi Moggs
The only time I've ever had a belt squeal was when it was too loose. New belts need retensioning after a week or so, but if it squealed immediately after fitting, it's not been fitted properly.
Cheers

I had a belt squeal for a while after I had to jump start the engine ( left the lights on - duh!), the squealing stopped once the battery took up a decent charge. This is with a 90A alternator, the belt is not new but was correctly tensioned, IMO - it never squeals now even if I turn all the lights and spotties on.

Not sure if the Pathy is the same setup as the Patrol belt and tensioner, we had a Patrol away with us last trip and it really screamed. Took it in to have it checked and they found the Tensioner was st#@fed. Seems they have a pressure tensioned, tensioner, it uses a small shocker. the shocker and pulley were fine, just the pivot pin bearing was loose. (of course they don't make a replacement pivot bearing or a generic brand tensioner, cost was around $500)
