HI guys - i have once again burnt out my alternator on my 92 model 4 runner ( petrol ) I do often do
water crossings but usually no deeper than the tops of my tyres , so it not like my alternator is being totally submerged-
Took the alternator to the auto electrician that reco'd it last time --- pulls it apart and informs me that it looks like it has had
water in it ---- NO JOKE MATE , i reply - ITS A 4 WHEEL DRIVE - THEY DO OCCASIONALLY SEE
WATER AND DIRT UNLIKE MOST OF THE NEW 'SHINEY' 4X4'S
anyway - new one from toyota - $800 something dollars -- almost had a heart attack when i was told ! Is there another alternative i could use? I am a fitter machinst by trade and do own a lathe and milling machine - so can make up brackets to suit a new alternator - just want something reliable and one that does not act like girl and throw in the towl at the first
sign of
water
Frank

there's heaps of options out the i think it should be just a case of picking an appropriate on ampage wise and being a metal worker by trade you could probably knock up a bracket to hold it. a mate did this when he blew the one on his hilux.

Frank.
The nipon denso unit you have is as good as any other unit, I sugest you try mounting it a bit higher on the motor, another trick is to get some of the new lanolin based
water proof sprays from you local bearing
shop, the lanolin spray will protect the internals from
water spray.

put electrical windings in
water and what do you expect?
I dont know of any waterproof alternators yet so I guess we'll just have to put up with sacrificial ones for now.
1) You could disconnect your fan belt before you cross. That would stop
water being sucked in to the alternator by the cooling fan on it. But if its in
water it'll still get
water in it, just let it dry out for a bit after the crossing, and Lanotec, Lanotec, Lanotec.
2) put a tarp around the nose of your truck to minimise the amount of
water going in the engine bay.
