I've been reading the insurance questions with interest, having just finalised our quotes for insurance on our new car and camper trailer. What I can't work out how to insure is the loose items, mainly the $2,000 laptop, and other things such as cameras, walkie talkies, bikes and other personal gear. We are taking off in three weeks and will be of "no fixed address" for the next year or so, and therefore we don't have access to a home and contents policy. The car insurers won't insure items not fixed or part of the car. I have found one CT insurer who will insure items in, or part of the CT set up. But unless we lock the laptop etc in the CT when driving, or leaving the campsite (eg for a bushwalk), I can't think of how to insure them.

At present I've decided not to worry about it. After all, you can't cross every t and dot every i and we wouldn't be doing this trip without a sense of adventure. And having insured the big items (car and CT) we have to some extent protected our major investements.

What do other people do in this situation?

(PS I have been explaining to my 10 yr old son that we will be 'of no fixed address', but that IMO we are not vagrants or homeless.....)

Cheers

DB

Read recent post 26252.
TCIS have a good policy for those accessories and other gear carried in vehicle.

Hope you have a great trip and no reason to claim on insurance.

Morning DB

I posted about this subject in August 05 somewhere and at this moment haven't got time to search it.

However, you are correct in what you say and the only thing/s that are insured are what are listed on your policy for the camper, caravan, RV etc.

All the other things such as GPS, Laptop, Camera, EPIRB ???, jewellery, Binos, etc etc - unless listed on that policy are not covered under anything.

EXCEPT: (always one of these)

They can be covered under Household contents, but there is another catch to this also.

That being they have to be Individual specifically listed items and the policy premium goes up exponentially to cover same.

So its a case of risk management i.e. how many $$$'s you want to pay for how much cover you are seeking.

Now the above is not verbatim 'Insurance speak' and is not a fix for all situations as the Insurance Companies treat each each policy proposal on a case by case basis.

However it is the simplest I can explain such a complex issue.

Hope it assists you

Try asking for a "special risks" policy.
I have my stuff with RAC on this- GPS, lappy, mobile, camera, sunnies etc. It covers them anywhere in oz, however you not having a contents policy will cause problems as they require this first. You may be able to find if they have special circumstances where you can still be granted cover, but Im not sure how much luck you will have.
The RAC policy does a straight out new replacement of stolen/lost/damaged gear or else they pay out the insured value which you specify.

I have seen a few companies that dont bother telling you that Camper contents are not insured if you do not have solid walls on your CT, so double check this.

I have my camping gear insured through TCIS, but also have house contents covered through CGU insurance and with their super-dooper coverage my contents are covered anywhere in Australia and New Zealand for theft, accidental damage and loss. It's a little dearer but definitely not as much as having to replace something that isn't insured. I have claimed for a mobile phone that "flew" out the window of my car and also for breakage on a bottle of perfume (expensive kind) while on holiday. Give them a call and see what they can offer you. You don't have to individually list items unless they are valuables over $1250 (eg, rings, watches, etc).

The old "All Risks' or now comonly known as "Personal Property" policy can cover this stuff subject to geographical limitations for a premium and excess. Generally 2 sections. Unspecified section has a single article limit and an overall policy limit. Specified section is what you list and the insurer is willing to accept.
